I would like you to inspire you to take a new look and attitude towards your body with its individual needs, and start a personal health profile. We all have different genes, and different requirements. We need to understand our selves better. We can even have better health going through an illness. Doctors treat illness, Pharmaceutical companies make drugs, Big Agri business grows crops, the food industry produces food, and the aim is to make money. Nobody has a vested interest in our well being. The more we understand our systems, the easier it is to maintain good health. We accept that everything is contaminated to a certain extent, and that the human body has adapted and coped extremely well. We need to minimize these poisins and toxins as best we can. Artificial Sweetners, Additives and Preservatives are huge offenders and we have choice here. We are now controlled by sell by dates, which results in 1/3 of bought food being thrown out. The best food is food that goes off, and we all have a sense of smell, and food nearest its original form.

Think of a car. When something breaks we bring it to a garage and get it mended or replaced, but it is the regular servicing of all the systems that keep it running smoothly. Our body works 24 hours a day since the day we were born, and yet we do little to keep an eye on how we are doing till illness strikes.Years ago the old fashioned doctor was an keen observer and could learn a lot about your general health from a few simple checks, and was more inclined to look at the whole person.

I am going to give you some general information to inspire you build a personal health profile. After years of research I personally concentrate on : A Good digestive tract, clean gut and good elimination, the acid/Alkaline balance in the system, and the metaphysical connection. We are not only what we eat, but what we assimilate, and the nutrients we absorb from our food. I will do articles on these in the future.Counting calories, constant dieting and labeling drive me mad. All processed foods including processed “Health Foods” have additives, and if you eat a big cream cake, you know you need to work the extra calories off. Here are some little pointers off the top of my head.

Every 90 days builds a new bloodstream and every 11 months new body cells. We have 50 TRILLION CELLS, 206 BONES and 640 MUSCLES. THE ALIMENTARY CANAL(from mouth to bum) is over 30 feet long (no wonder it should be clean)
2/3 of body weight = WATER.
60% of the brain = Essential fatty acids.
Sugar in the blood = 2 teaspoons.
Exercise: walk 1 mile under 12 minutes = fit.

NORMAL PULSE = 72. 60 69 =low risk. 70 79 = medium risk. 80+=high risk
BLOOD PRESSURE: 90/60 120/80 = low risk.125/85 135/89 = medium risk 136/90 or higher = high risk.
CHOLESTEROL. HDL (HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN) READING 3/1 = low risk. 5/1 = medium risk. 8/1 = high risk.
EYES should be bright and clear. Bulging eyes indicate thyroid problems, white rings around the eye – high cholesterol. Yellow tinge shows liver dysfunction.
GUMS. Healthy gums should be pink and firm.
TONGUE: Normal tongue should be moderate size, even pink colour, smooth around the edges, without coating, or indentations showing where it rested against the teeth. A red beefy tongue with deep ridges indicated an undersupply of The B Vitamins. Coated tongue bad digestion and elimination.
NAILS Nails that split, break, or are thin show a lack of protein, and Vitamin A. White spots on the nails show a lack of Zinc. Transverse and longitudal lines sometimes indicate anaemia, and Vitamin B deficiency.

THE ORGANS OF ELIMINATION ARE THE SKIN, THE LUNGS, THE KIDNEYS AND THE BOWEL.
URINE. Normal colour = amber. Cloudy = too much protein. Dark= too much salt. Certain foods and medication can change the colour of urine. Blood in the urine – see a doctor.
STOOLS: Good elimination is very important. You can do the Corn Kernel Test. Eat some sweetcorn and see how long it takes to pass through. It comes out whole and easily visible. It should take about 10 hours. If more, elimination is not good, and toxins are being stored in the body, The normal stool should be mid brown, the consistency of toothpaste, come away with ease, not foul smelling, be 4 to 8 inches long, float gently to the bottom of the bowl and a daily function. A swiftly sinking stool indicated a lack of fibre, or not enough fluids, and is often dark, and a floating stool indicates too much fat. It is not necessary to go into other varieties, as I am ready to throw up. Black stools, or blood in the stools – see a doctor.

I was delighted with the participation and response to the honey article. I hope this one encourages you to do a little check up, and get to know yourself better. We can enjoy feeling better by small changes. It's worth reading WW’s posting on Artificial Sweetners in the General Discussion Forum. They do untold harm. Digestion hopefully with a diagram will be the next article.

Interesting fact:

(Mainly because I saw the bit about stools!)

Stools are measured on th Bristol Stool Scale, and are as follows:

The seven types of stool are:
Type 1: Separate hard lumps, like nuts (hard to pass)
Type 2: Sausage-shaped, but lumpy
Type 3: Like a sausage but with cracks on its surface
Type 4: Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft
Type 5: Soft blobs with clear cut edges (passed easily)
Type 6: Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool
Type 7: Watery, no solid pieces. Entirely liquid

I always find this amusing because I only live about 20 miles from Bristol and kind of link it with stools!

Keep educating people Tiggy, good stuff.
I'm sure Tiggy will back me up though and remind you about everything in moderation even if it appears "natural".
For example I'm sure Twiglet is far too sensible to go overboard but excessive Vit A is stored in the liver and can itself cause problems. I've seen cases of cod liver oil "poisoning"!
Similiarly if your wee is pale straw coloured, your fluid balance is fine and you do not need to drink more than 2 litres a day. We get loads of fluid from our food as well.
I will never think of Bristol in the same way again Jaynebeth.. Shocked

Also it may be worth mentioning that if you try to take your own pulse it always goes up.

Excellent and wonderfully informative Tig, easy to read and I concur with the comments.

Hi Tiggy - do you know what causes a geographic tongue - is it a lack of something ie vitamins, or minerals.

I would be interested to know the answer to that, having one. The man in the dental hospital was very busy showing it to a batch of students but didn't say what caused it.

Geographic tongue is a condition that effects 2% of the population. It is called Benign migratory glossitis. It can be a family condition, and people suffering from allergies, eczema, diabetes, psoriasis or stress are more prone. It often resolves itself, as such has no treatment, and is nothing to worry about. However, I feel irregularities of the tongue often indicate a lack of B Vitamins. While I am not in favour of getting into the habit of knocking back tons of vitamins, and prefer to rely on boosting my extra requirements through food, if run down a course of Mega Vitamin B Complex always gives a boost. The best general tonic I find, is Pharmaton, or Vivioptal if you are not allergic to iron. They are a little more expensive, but worth it, as there are so many useless cheap supplements in the market.
