Anti Antibiotics

Pretty isn't it - and partly purple too

"Antibiotics don't work on colds, most coughs or sore throats. The best way to treat them is plenty of fluids and rest. Taking antibiotics kills your good bacteria and can lead to antibiotic resistance. For more information talk to your pharmacist or go to"

I hope you will not need this information - Rosie (ex virologist)

Westerwitch's Avatar Next time I am up to my eyes in a horrible cold I will try to comfort myself with how pretty the virus is . . . LaughingLaughingLaughing I do love the colours in it though.

It's very pretty - but proves looks can be deceiving!

Good topic. I think things have improved but in the past doctors often gave out antibiotics when not required and patients wanted them too. As if they just felt better taking something even when chances were slim that they would do any good.

Surely this helped to bring on the killer stuff like MRSA. And weakened our immune systems.

I try not to take antibiotics, keeping them as the reserve weapon for when/if there is an emergency.

As you say, the best thing to get well is to allow your body the time, and rest.

Ivy's Avatar I have only once taken antibiotics in my life and they were a lifesaver then but I even saw my kids through middle ear infections and pneumonia without them. God that they do exist but be careful when to take them.

Unpeuloufoque's Avatar Our childhood doctor was very anti antibiotics and swore they wuld breed a super germ, a man of vision was Dr Ramsay, hence we never had them. I therefore have always prefered to give the body a chance to heal itself soemthing that it will often do given time and sensible behaviour I find! Here they take a saliva swob before prescribing antibiotics to see if it is viral or bacterial infection. Despite the French reputation for being hyperchrondriacs they are terribly sensible about health sometimes!

Fennie's Avatar I find a glass of malt whisky and aspirin works wonders. Thanks, Rosie, for the pretty virus picture. Does it have a name? Actually, I see it as a big shield and behind it there's a little orc or something like that with a sword ready to stab you in the throat. But I agree with the antibiotics. Tell the meat industry to stop putting them into pigs and chickens, too.

Frances's Avatar Thank you for posting your wise words re antibiotics! This is one of those seasons....

I have always been wary of antibiotics, and have rarely taken them. My dentist used to prescribe them due to my having mitral valve prolapse, but even that protocol has now changed, and that prescription is a thing of the past.

It horrifies me that a friend's baby has already been taking antibiotics. I said my piece to my friend, and now just bite my tongue.

Sorry for this longish comment, but once I get going, the words flow.
