Cowart's Common Room
Re Barak

I do wish the media would stop referring to him as 'The first BLACK president'. He is after all, half white.

Pondside's Avatar Ah, but in living history no one who is half white has been referred to as white.

Unpeuloufoque's Avatar Whatever colour I jsut hope the poor man gts to live long enough to dosome good, am sure some idiot is going to think he ought to take a pot shot at him whichever bit of him is white or black...from what I can reemmber of my American and South African cousins I suspect being half white is probably a bigger crime than being all black....whatever I do wish him well.

Westerwitch's Avatar Hear hear . . .

Yes it occured to me to that he is now a prime target.

I think his era will either be a brillaint one or a very very bad one, and part of that will be how people of all colours react to him being in power.

Having grown up in California in the times of Martin Luther King part of me is very emotional about this, and having also witnessed the race riots part of me is also very apprehensive. I noted that they interviewed some hoodie last night who was having difficulty stringing sentences together and whose whole world was 'rap' but who nonetheless felt a brotherhsip to Obama. He may find this very hard to deal with and yet that is part of it all. He must change the prospects of the blacks in America - how to do that? A Massive ask. In my opinion this is not just a black issue but of course one about poverty and lack of education as well as motivation.

As if that is not enough he then has to undo all the bad that the Bush administration has done.

He is young and strong and does show vision - I agree let's hope he is given the chance to use it.

Milla's Avatar he delivered his speech through 3 inches of glass, you could hardly see him.

Ivy's Avatar You need not be black to be assasinated as US president. (Kennedy, Lincoln) but I hope Obama will not become the target of some crank who thinks he can't cope with the colour of his skin or his innovative ideas.

Milla's Avatar I don’t even think of him as black, since he’s at least as white, and it’s surely a rather objectionable return to the slavery/segregation-era idea that miscegenation necessarily resulted in some kind of taint, although the crackpots disagree. He's possibly the least black black man in America, having been brought up by a wealthy white family and kept well away from his “roots” except for trips – not the ghettoes of the inner city, but – to Africa but still it's the black bit that shows.

FunkyMunky's Avatar I just hope he can live up to all the hype!

My daughter is half white, half Asian, and yet I see her as white like me. My husband sees her as brown like him and can't get his head around the fact that she doesn't have long, luscious black hair like his family. (Poor thing got stuck with fine, flyaway hair like me)

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

It's a pity that he has to be half-white, Harvard educated, law professor and community activist to be elected as the first "black", - but babysteps. The only woman (Hillary) to get near the Presidency hope (and we don't count Palin) was far more educated and experienced than the sitting Prez. My point being that both were far beyond what is normally required of a white male here.
