Fennie's Avatar Camilla that is so kind! Indeed the kindness of folk always surprises and touches me. A couple of old friends invited us to lunch yesterday and we spent five hours with them, having lunch and catching up. The cake looks lovely: I imagine a thick layer of marzipan, but I mustn't eat too many sweet things as my liver, like my short term memory is all shot to pieces. I am on my way out, cakes or no cakes.

I love the birds tip-toeing, not so much through the tulips as the lilacs or irises or blue bells; I can never tell. Children phoned at 8am. Trouble is, with my defunct ears, Beanie, Theo and YD all sound the same on the phone, except when Beanie talks in cat language. They will come over at the weekend.

Grey skies and dampness - not usual birthday weather of sunshine glinting on the candles of the horse chestnuts - but there we are. The horse chestnuts are no longer about. And to think that when I was young we had a whole drive of them!

But anyway you have a good day too and thanks for the kind and touching thoughts. Take care and have a good day everyone.

Fairy Nuff's Avatar LaughingI'm inclined to send you a large tube of glue for your birthday to mend all your broken bits Fennie.
Our old neighbour at the Studio always used to say, when you enquired after his health "OH... hanging by a tack, hanging by a tack" so for his birthday I once bought him a little sewing kit so he could reinforce his tack. Very Happy

Have some cake and celebrate... make the most of it while you can. Wink Laughing

Fennie's Avatar That is very kind. May I indulge in a Gin and Tonic too?

My father's expression - which I sometimes use if I am feeling cheerful - was 'fair to middling.'

Fennie's Avatar My father's other expression was 'Still Alive' which probably came from his wartime experience as plenty of his colleagues were not so fortunate.

On the same theme my MIL used to say "I don't know why the Good Lord keeps me alive."

Fennie's Avatar Thanks for the G and T btw. But to make it special - this is my birthday after all so I'm allowed - could you put it please in a tumbler and just with a single slice of lemon and without any other vegetable matter. Also start with the gin (which should be an ordinary gin like Gordon's) to which add a squirt of lemon juice and one ice cube, then at a full measure (small can) of tonic. If you put the lemon juice into the tonic you lose all the tonic bubbles. Very Happy

Camilla's Avatar Your MIL sounds as if she had a sense of humour Fennie.
And your dear Pa too, yes sadly not all soldiers came back from the war.

KitKatCot's Avatar Happy Birthday Fennie.

Himself has a customer who, when asked how he is, says 'When I woke up this morning I was still warm to the touch. That'll do me'

I would join you in a G&T but it gives me awful heartburn these days Rolling Eyes

Fennie's Avatar That is a shame KKC - perhaps you need to eat something with it, or not make it quite so strong, or drink a glass of water first, but I know just how you feel because if often happens to me! Very Happy

Lampworkbeader's Avatar Happy Birthday Fennie and may there be many more of them to come.

Fennie's Avatar The trouble is, Lampie, as I said to someone who wished me the same thing today, that at my advanced age (at which Withy would laugh, I know) 'many more of them' has degraded into just 'a few more yet!' A scattering of more birthdays that is all - though one can but hope. How many is 'many?' I would guess about 20, which would put me in my nineties. Not impossible, I suppose, especially if you live in Japan and eat a lot of fish. Which I don't. But it is quality of life that counts so perhaps wish me 'may your future life be of ever higher quality,' which sounds Japanese so back we are to the raw fish. Shocked
