Smart Meters

Two engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity came calling this morning, an appointment booked previously by telephone. Apparently the smart meter attached to the gas meter had fallen out with the smart meter attached to the electricity meter and was no longer talking to it and so the engineers were here to banish the smart meter attached to the gas meter and introduce a new friend to the electricity meter. Apparently the smart meters like to talk to each other for company as they are shut away in darkened compartments and tell each other what electricity or gas I am using and then one of them calls to the Electricity Company (which is also the Gas Company) and talks to a computer which in due course sends me a bill and increases my direct debit.

It took them a couple of hours and two cups of coffee but they were practical lads and thorough in their work testing all the appliances and making sure all was working and finally fixing the broken door on the gas meter housing that has been broken for more than a quarter of a century. I said if anyone asked I would give them a five star review. They even took their boots off before coming into the house. So full marks to them.

Of course nothing is for free and we pay for all this work even though the Electricity companies say we don't. Smart meters are supposed to save you money though I do not understand how. I know how I could save electricity and that is by turning of half of our refrigeration and freezer capacity but J will not hear of it and so we just keep on paying to keep food frozen long after it is not longer fit to eat. Still I suppose it is a small price to pay for domestic harmony and I don't need a smart meter to tell me that. Very HappyVery Happy

Withy Brook's Avatar Fortunately for us it would be useless offering us a smart meter. As we don’t have gas there would be no one for it to talk to and as our broadband is so poor, it wouldn’t be able to talk to its boss either!

KitKatCot's Avatar After months of ignoring letters from our electric company about having a smart meter installed, last week they sent me a letter saying someone would call on Christmas Eve to fit our meter.

I 'girded my loins' and phoned them, ready with the reasons I didn't need a smart meter. A very pleasant young lady answered, 'I can see why you wouldn't want an installation on Christmas Eve' she said 'Would you like to reschedule the appointment?'

Ready to stand my ground, I said no thank you. Instead of the expected 'hard sale' she said 'That's fine, I'll note that, you will probably get a reminder every 8 weeks but just ignore it'

I was really fired up to defend my case, it was quite reassuring not to have to.

Faith's Avatar Well, we have a smart meter. I doubt it means we save money. All it does is make Bill look at it and say 'What's on....what's using all that leccy?' which makes me feel guilty, though why it should I don't know.

Fairy Nuff's Avatar I'd love to know just where all these savings are meant to come from - if you don't waste electricity in the first place by leaving empty rooms with all lights blazing or the TV on while no one is watching what can you switch off that you are not using?
Not the fridge or freezer certainly and despite the suggestions you should switch off your TV/DVD players at night until the manufacturers add a rechargeable battery to keep the settings and clocks going you have to reset it every time you switch it on again - smart telly's aren't always so smart after all! Rolling Eyes

My main problem with Smart meters is, should you decide to change suppliers the new supplier will first have to come fit another different smart meter as they are not universal bit's of kit.Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

Camilla's Avatar I have heard quite a few people now have switched to a Smart Reader, the engineer who came to fix our washer/dryer said he had just had one fitted.
