Cowart's Common Room
Lark Post

I am given to thinking that the Creator could have dispensed with the fires of hell and instead just given us constant hot humid weather with an endless diet of football and Brexit controversy, though I might well change my mind if a devil were behind me pricking me with his pitchfork while the flames roared below (but surely I wouldn't then last a moment and so my torment would be extremely short?) And how come the devils themselves do not get burnt? And was it God that created Hell, or was it Lucifer? Despite attending a Catholic school for a time my theology is deficient. I think they discouraged questions.

Maybe I am approaching the end of life - lack of sleep and a feeling of mortality a consequence of the hot weather. Of course I stir the pot of Brexit controversy and I watch at least some of the football. But you can have too much of a good thing and the constant excitements and disappointments leave the soul ragged.

Last night I dragged pillows (no need for bedding) downstairs and opened the sofa bed. It wasn't much cooler. I sleep until about three or four and then wake. By then it's colder. Last night I was hungry and so took two and a half digestive biscuits and a glass of milk and managed another hour or so. But my brain was racing: a new thought or memory every five seconds. Impossible to engage with such thoughts, which are mostly bad anyway, or to keep them away.

Yet another hot day is in prospect, the temperature already mounting. Business is very slack. Ah well, have a good day. Stay cool and hydrated. There is a surprising quantity of water in the river at least. Our aquifers run deep.

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar I recognised some of what you have written, Fennie, though it is not nearly as hot up here and cooler still today.
The aquifers got well filled last winter/spring. The problem is over use resulting in drop in temperature. Our neighbours are having to take huge quantities of water up to the top of the farm for their suckler cows. The pressure is too low for the water to reach their drinking trough. These animals are more important than people's lawns and flowers. I water begs and anything just planted. Some plants are dying, but will hopefully recover when the rains come.

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Morning Fennie, Withy and everyone,

Thank you for posting for the larks Fennie.

20 degrees here today sunny intervals with light winds and light cloud coverage so not so hot. A rather tossy turny night too for me too I brought pilows and slept on the sofa after midnight and had the fan going all night too so very muggy.

When does your business wind down this year Fennie? Did you see Antique Roadshow last night it was at Cardiff Castle gosh what amazing opulence of grandeur in the interiors I am sure you have told us before about this Castle which is quite where you live .

Have a good day everyone .Very Happy

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Yes, by chance I caught the Antiques Road show which was fascinating as ever.

I am ashamed to say I have never been in Cardiff Castle, which is just as well for I dislike that high Gothic ornate ornamentation. They did these things much better in my view in the eighteenth century than in the nineteenth.

But if you like Cardiff Castle you should look up Castell Coch (Red Castle) set on a crag just to the north of Cardiff. Again it's a medieval castle on a neolithic site but it's had the whole Bute/Burgess treatment. People hold weddings there. Very Happy

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Went for a long walk over the dunes earlier with Patch only wore a thin cardigan over my trousers and I felt very cold indeed, such a very cold blustery keen easterly breeze. One minute we have hot weather the next it's cooler.Very Happy
