Cowart's Common Room
Typical Northumbrian weather

Yesterday we expected wall to wall sunshine as forecast. What did we get? Light overcast and a cool wind all day. Why did it matter? We were having our first Church Fete for a number of years in the garden of Capheaton Hall. The grounds and walled garden were included in the entry price and there were more than the usual stalls - i.e. A climbing wall and an army cadet band. Of course, you never know how many to cater for but we certainly had an awful lot of food left over! I had the easy job of taking the money for the teas, so was able to sit down.
June is always a busy time. So many things going on. Something called football World Cup, Queens tennis, Local activities. And a limited population! Ah well! As someone said, if we make £1,500 it will have been worth it. I took about £250 so that was a good start.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Most excellent Withy. We face the same problems of raising cash in the Twinning Association. But I think more people must have made more money out of serving teas than anything else. I remember hearing of two men who started a major hotel and catering business (household names - would it have been Morley? - Brain is going) who said that they started in the army in WW11. They would rise half an hour before everyone else and brew tea and then they charged all the soldiers in their barracks 3d a cup. That was the start of their fortune.

But churches cost a lot to maintain. I hope you are getting your share of heritage lottery and all the other funding schemes: there's quite a bit of money, I am told, available to enterprising organisers. Very Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar Teas and cakes seem to be the money maker every where, garden centres, antique shops, craft shops (we simply don't have room) any thing seems to work better if there's tea and cakes.
I hope the rest of the stalls did as well as you did Withy.
