Re:
Fennie's Avatar Goldstar, Faith. Actually we have an old smoothing iron like the ones shown and it is in use whenever we have to measure reels of labels as it has a nice pointed end to show where to cut and can't be easily knocked out of position. Very valuable piece of kit - though not used for smoothing. Very Happy

Camilla's Avatar Cant get the link Faith but I have heard that lovely ol song Dashing away with a smoothing iron.Very Happy

My mother used to have an old steel iron I remember when I was small she used to have to keep putting it on the hot plate of the oven to get it hot, no electrical ones we had then. I also remember her spitting on her fingers and then touching the base of the iron to see how hot the iron was.Very Happy

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar Actually, Camilla, I think she will have spat directly on the iron, otherwise she might have burnt her finger! I had forgotten about that but remember now. It had to sizzle to show the iron was hot enough.

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar I've only ever used one as a door stop... but then it was too old and lumpy to have ironed with.

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Oh yes of course Withy mother obviously spat on the iron to see if it was still hot rather than spitting on her fingers.Very Happy
