Cowart's Common Room

Probably in the context of Withy's gourmet meal homework I was thinking about Genoa in Italy this afternoon where once I did have a gourmet meal that was memorable both for its location in some sort of medieval mansion and for the excellence of its food. I cannot now remember what we had to eat but I do remember that with the dessert was served a sparkling red wine which was red and the best pudding wine I have ever tasted. I have never seen it since, however. I also had in Genoa on some pavement somewhere one of the best starters I have ever eaten and one of the simplest - a tomato and basil and feta cheese salad with olives and slices of a delicious salami with wonderful bread and all to be eaten in the sunshine and overlooking the sea.

Genoa is a medieval city - indeed the home port of Christopher Columbus - but walking around the city it seems as though a thousand medieval wonders - cathedrals, ducal palaces, arcaded porticos, squares, terraces, gardens and what have you - were all put in a pepper shaker and shaken out at random over a maze of tiny streets around which those noisy Italian scooters shoot like angry hornets. There's a new gem at every turn if you aren't knocked over. That and the trompe d'oeil: here's a building, here's a window - except that it isn't it is only a painting of a window. Even the cornices are sometimes painted on and so real do they seem that only an absence of a shadow that moves with the sun suggests they are fake.

I was there for a conference but has anyone else been there? There is also a wonderful modern aquarium. Just google Genoa and a treasure chest awaits you. Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Not many people seem to go to Genoa apart from Christopher Columbus and he didn't go but went. But do look up Genoa on the internet and then you can see all the pictures and take a virtual tour. Lyvia, Inspector Montelbano's Swedish girlfriend, worked in Genoa.Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar I've not been there either, Rome, Sorrento, a swift day trip to Capri and two trips to Pompeii on my holiday.
I would love to go back to Italy.
