Cowart's Common Room
Clearly I am Ranting

I am wearing my curmudgeon's hat today and what I am curmudgeoning about is quite clear: let me say clearly, not to say crystal clearly (when did you last try to look through a salt crystal or any other sort of crystal come to that, except perhaps glass, which isn't a crystal at all, but there we are) that 'clear' and 'clearly' are overworked words that are trying my patience and 'clearly' deserve to be given a very 'clear' break and put resolutely and 'clearly' into the lexicographer's bin.

Most of the time the word 'clearly' adds nothing to the meaning. And 'very clearly' adds even less.

This is clearly unsustainable = This is unsustainable

At other times clearly intrudes like an awkward weed, displacing far better words like 'emphasize' or 'unambiguous' or 'in terms.'

So, let me be clear = So let me emphasize . .

The manifesto clearly sets out . . . = The manifesto sets out unambiguously. . . (or just 'sets out')

It seems these days no politician or commentator can say more than three sentences without a 'clear' or 'clearly.' Curmudgeons can only take so much. There rant overVery HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar So let me clear this up, you clearly have a clear problem with the use of clearly instead of other clearly more clear alternatives. Twisted Evil
