Cowart's Common Room

I am off to France tomorrow to visit an old friend from university days who now sadly has Parkinson's disease. Parkinson seems to be giving his disease out left, right and centre these days and sometimes his disease flourishes and sometimes it does not.

I heard today of someone who was apt to 'freeze' in the middle of her shopping or whatever and have to be given an injection immediately to unfreeze her, which sounds cartoonish, like the Duracell bunny (or rather the zinc-carbon bunny) but which is really rather unpleasant and serious. I don't think my friend has reached the same state, but he is reduced to using a walking frame and is a shadow of his former vigourous self.

He and I once hitchhiked from London to Athens in 10 days; not easy to see us doing that now. Anyway, I shall report back when I have paid my flying visit. I leave tomorrow evening, all being well arriving in Le Havre early on Friday morning whence his wife will retrieve me, driving being another skill that has been lost to the ubiquitous Mr P.

I can't say I am much looking forward to the trip for I am never very good when confronted by illness. I tend either to be facetious or tactless or silent. Hardest of all was a colleague hit by a stroke as he was making his speech of thanks to the family at his fiftieth wedding anniversary. A funny, generous, eclectic Professor emeritus and semi-professional singer, and now here he was in some sort of bed in some sort of ward surrounded by similar imbeciles and incapables; the power of movement gone, the power of speech gone. You may be better at that sort of situation than I. Still old age is not for the faint-hearted as someone said once. We must all battle on, but if I am not around over the weekend you will know why. I probably won't take the laptop. But I shall probably be back not much worse than when I went away on Monday Very HappyVery Happy

Fennie's Avatar PS what the picture shows I have no idea but it was used on one of the Parkinson's website so I suppose it is a bit of the brain, though it could be the motorway network around Brussels by night.Very Happy

Faith's Avatar Shame about your friend Fennie, but it will cheer him to see you, and no doubt you will enjoy the break away from labels and committee meetingsLaughing
