Cowart's Common Room
DOVE BITE - Dwight and Demelza

The babies, Dwight and Demelza, are over four weeks old. They move freely about the aviary, but have not yet been outside, and still like to spend a lot of time sitting in with mummy Mariette, or daddy Pan, whoever is on the new eggs. If Pan doesn't take them outside by the end of the week, then I will.....but so far I have left it all up to him and Mariette.

Pascal is not tolerant of the babies, and pecks them when they come near. I think he is in a mood because he and Primrose don't seem to be having new eggs. I don't really understand it. They had their first babies, Myth and Magic, when they were only just over babies themselves - and a while later they had babies that didn't live more than a couple of days..... and now, nothing.

Below, Demelza, left and Dwight - peas in a pod!

Fennie's Avatar Are those really babies - just four weeks old. Gosh it is not only human offspring that grow up fast these days. Those look old birds, not squabs, but I suppose they don't want to leave home when there are three square meals a day provided and no one minds too much if you leave wet towels all over the bathroom floor. Even so I'd put them to work, carrying messages for facebook or whatever it is that pigeons do these days. Very HappyVery Happy

Fairy Nuff's Avatar Gosh it seems just like last week that they were still little yellow fuzzballs. Very Happy
Are they flying yet or just walking about the aviary?

Camilla's Avatar Thanks for the update Faith, lovely pic my how they have grown and not very old either . They really do look like two peas in a pod same colour markings could be twins even. I see they have different colour rings on, blue for a boy and pink for a girl maybe.Very Happy

Faith's Avatar I don't know their sex I just guess Camilla - Demelza has orange and blue rings and Dwight purple and pink. Rings are determined by whatever colour combos are not currently in use, so I don't mix birds up.

Yes FN they can fly - I think I much prefer having an aviary than the cote - though the cote is pretty - because it gives the babies a chance to move about and learn how to fly in the safe environment. Also when they do go outside, it is far easier for them to walk back in through a big open door, than fly to a tiny pigeon hole in the cote. And also I get to see much more of them as babies.

I never want the babies to leave home so early - when they do they are far more at risk. But my old Christmas baby Quinn, is always out with the flock and doing very well.
