Pigeon Bathing

This probably is only of interest to Faith but here are two pigeons bathing in the River Thames near Hampton Court. The one further out is practically swimming. Could a pigeon swim? Anyway he seems to be enjoying himself. The second one seems a little reluctant to do more than paddle.

Fennie's Avatar PS The pigeon wasn't injured or anything. He was splashing away like anything but then he saw me and stopped. I think pigeons get self-conscious if you try to take pictures of them.

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar If you had a bird bath as we do you would see all manner of birds having a dip. The pigeon probably had his feet firmly on the bottom and was just giving his armpits a good wash.

Faith's Avatar I don't know if pigeons can swim or not. From what I have observed I would say not. Fennie's pigeons are wood pigeons of course and quite large substantial birds, and I think the 'swimming' one is, as Rosie says, just standing in the water. I think pigeons in general do enjoy bathing - my doves and pigeons often sit for a long time in the water - and it's a method of getting rid of parasites. And they also sit in water before their eggs are due to hatch, as it assists the process. Thanks for the picture Fennie.

Fennie's Avatar That is an interesting fact, Faith. When I used to hatch eggs in an incubator I remember we had to splash the eggs with water but I forget why now. To stop them drying out I suppose.

Camilla's Avatar I did not think Pigeons could swim either, as Rosie says perhaps Pigeon is only sitting in shallow water with his feet firmly on the bottom.
