Are you wearing Purple?

Purple Day for Epilepsy

It's Epilepsy day today, where people around the world have been asked to wear something purple and support Epilepsy. Being epileptic I am obviously donned in purple - a jumper to be precise.

Amy has gone to school in a purple anorak, her regular purple school bag and a purple folder for her piano lesson. So all in all, we are very purple!

If anyone's interested, I've done a post about my own epilepsy and given a few facts together with some websites for information. It's longer than I would usually do but it's important that this condition is talked about more often - in my opinion - as it often gets pushed under the carpet.

Many thanks for reading,
CJ xx

Re:
ChrisH's Avatar As I have commented on your post, we've had long experience of epilepsy in our family too and it is a condition that's pushed under the carpet. When my sister was little she didn't get invited round to friends' houses because people were too afraid of her having a convulsion. Poor old sausage used to break her heart. Mind you, it didn't stop me biting her once when she really annoyed me.

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I shall wear my best purple cashmere sweater tonight at the theatre - 2nd performance and to answer a previous query the play runs until Saturday. For the rest of the day I shall be using purple prose as those pesky gloves are still AWOL.

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar Only purple clothing I have is a long evening coat which might look a tad bizarre for the supermarket. But I will dig out a purpleish scarf.
Yes, I agree it's pushed under the carpet....and does need talking about. Have experience of it in my family too - and used to share a flat with two girls with it.
Weirdly, seems as though more people are now developing it at an older age. Two men we know - both in late thirties - suddenly developed it. One very severely and now can no longer work (he's a builder and can't drive, use power tools, go up ladders etc) as they simply can't get it under control.

Re:
Puffin's Avatar Thanks for the reminder--
I will wear my purple scarf when I go shopping today.
Sadly-a very gifted lady that I wanted to hire in a store
'years ago' was not hired, because management were afraid
of her condition.
It broke my heart'at the time.'

Re:
Milla's Avatar how funny, Jane, that's my purple thing, too! A long velvet coat with a feathery neck thing. Sounds ghastly, but is rather lovely. Also, actually, a long knitted purple thing which IS possibly a bit ghastly, and a short purple knitted thing in which I feel like a teddy bear.

Re:
I have a purple cashmere sweater too, I shall put it on later when I go out.

Have a couple of friends with Epilepsy, my mate Andy's is still uncontrolled and he fits several times a day. He is frequently covered in bruises and cuts. His was caused by Meningitis when he was 15 (temporal lobe damage), completely changed his life. No one will employ him, and he is forced to live on disability benefits despite having 2 degrees! Sad He wishes very much that people werent so frightened/prejudiced about it.

Re:
Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar What can I say. On behalf of epileptics everywhere, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Very Happy

I've just been out in my long purple coat and am wearing purple eyeshadow today!

Your support is overwhelming. And isn't it strange how a lot of us at least know someone with epilepsy but I imagine, with respect, not many would know what to do in the even of someone having a seizure. It is scary. And it's happening all around us.

Big purple hugs to you all.

Re:
Mountainear's Avatar Well done Crystal - I'm just off to read your blog.

I possess nothing purple - apart from 'skool uniform' that is. If I eat a small purple wrappered bar of Cadbury's milk chocolate very conspicuously do you think it will count?

Re:
Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar Eat as much chocolate as you like, Mountainear. I might just join you!!

Re:
I joined in by wearing a purple hat and scarf today .... and felt like a mad little old lady.

Agree it is a great cause and should get more publicity, I too know someone who suffered from this.

But I do think Jane really should have worn her purple evening coat to the supermarket! You have to give the village something to talk about .... and after all you are a bohemian.
