Cowart's Common Room
Midas Touch

I'd heard that scrap gold was valuable so went through my dressing table and collected up all the old broken chains, odd earrings etc and took it over to a shop in Barnstaple this morning expecting about 30. I was gobsmacked when he told me it was 100 worth. Really it was only 9ct gold and nothing special. So now I have two new pairs of jeans and a few other bits and pieces. No going for another scratch about to see if I can find any more.

Re:
Tiggywinkle's Avatar I am a great fan of buying on EBay. My latest bender is buying Vintage Dolls. Have just bought a cute little black doll a few minutes ago, and an adorable baby doll last week. Think I'm gone a bit nuts, Tigger is throwing his eyes up to heaven, but will eventually give them to my grandchildren. I'm having a second childhood. I'd love a few tips on selling, Toady, as I have never done it. Must rummage through the Jewellery box!

Re:
Toady's Avatar I did an easy guide to selling on Ebay a while back. It's on the PR and marketing forum. As for selling the scrap gold I expect most towns have somebody that will buy it eg jeweller. You can sell it online, just google scrap gold and loads of sites come up BUT unless you have a really sensitive scale I can't see how you can weigh it properly and know that you're not being diddled.

Re:
KittyB's Avatar I think lots of jewellers are buying up gold now, I heard of one in our town who was offering cash for broken jewellery and I dug out some hideous old things, broken bits etc, I got 60! The only bits they wouldn't take was some middle eastern stuff with arabic marks instead of hallmarks. If it's hallmarked with a recognisable symbol then they'll weigh it and pay up.

Re
Camilla's Avatar Wow, that's brilliant Toady. I have a 21 cwt gold ladies watch, very old and is gold all over including the strap. Been around since the 1940's, not sure if it is worth anything though, and it needs repairing. I took it to a jeweller moons ago and he said it was not repairable which I found odd.
