Cowart's Common Room
Steam Train

Sorry about the photo, it's too far away I know but it was an exciting moment - particularly for the Farmer who ran upstairs so fast to fetch his camera, I thought he was in training for Chris's marathon today! However, the sight was pretty spectacular - especially for train enthusiasts or those who remember steam trains (I don't!) but for the Farmer he was in his element. And I dare say one of our Coo-ers will be when she sees this. You know who I mean, if you want the short video I took then let me know, I'll email it to you if I can.

Hope everyone's having a nice Sunday.

reminds me of the opening scene in Out of Africa, one of my all time fav films. How exciting to 'capture' this on film! Ahh, taking the train, how fun would that be! Very Happy

Westerwitch's Avatar Yes yes - I remember steam trains when I was a youngster - that lovely smell . . . and the excitement when Robot Boy as a young boy was allowed to sit in the cab of the Oban to Malaig special and actually make the whistle work . . . Mum got something in her eye . . . sniff sniff . . . Wink

Woozle1967's Avatar What a lovely sight - we are taking my nephew on the GWR steam train from Toddington this month to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Unfortunately, I don't qualify for the free under 25's travel....................Wink

Re:
Faith's Avatar Do you mean me CJ? Or rather Bill? Or maybe you don'tLaughing I'm glad the farmer enjoyed seeing the train - but surely you must see them often if you are on the line used by steam trains?

WW you are roughly the same age as me, maybe a year or so older, but I don't remember steam trains at all.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar I remember steam trains! Used to travel to school in one! They ran past the house at about the same distance as the one in the photograph, Crystal. Banging and bumping and clackety-clacking in the night. Hot oil, sulphur, the whoosh of the steam and the radiant heat of the engine as it passed you. Wonderful! Faith, you must have grown up in some desolate metropolis where all the trains were electric.

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Oh I can remember traveling on them as a small child and everyone rushing to shut the windows when we went through a tunnel. We used to live in Harlow and that is where I can remember traveling on the trains.

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar I travelled on steam trains for quite a large portion of my life. They weren't all fun though - they were dirty things, with all that soot Rolling Eyes I loved them though. I remember standing on a foot bridge, just North of Croft Station, near Darlington, to see the last one go under. The 2 children were with me - I wonder if they remember. Of course, several have gone under since but that was the last scheduled one. The Tornado went under just the other day. If I had lived a little nearer, I would have been there. You looked over one side to see it coming and as it went under, you dashed to the other side and then got choked by clouds of smoke. We loved it. Those were the days! Whistful icon needed!
I also saw Puffing Billy chug along a line somewhere in Durham, when they celebrated the 125th anniversary of the passenger railway.

Re:
Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar Sorry Faith! I was actually meaning SBS. When she came to the farm last year she couldn't take her eyes off the trains as they flew past the farm. The line is just a couple of fields away.

Re:
Puffin's Avatar As a child,we took a steam train to N.Y City, but they had to stop and change to electric before we came into the city.
They were a bit dirty, but I love to take one still to sight see, when on a vacation.
