Broodmare Urban Sea dies

One for the TB fans on here, especially Blossom.

Very sad to report that Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea has died at stud.

Not only was Urban Sea an outstanding racemare but she was extremely successful at stud being the dam of Epsom Derby winner Galileo, himself the Champion Sire for the first time this season, and sire of Lush Lashes and Sixties Icon. She also had a full brother to Galileo, Black Sam Bellamy, also now standing at stud.

She died foaling a colt to Invincible Spirit at the Irish National Stud.

Everyone connected are devastated.

I never met her but followed her career and feel I owe her a great debt. Racehorses like her are rare enough but she was also beautifully bred and when she was mated to Sadlers Wells I had a feeling that she would be the one who would give him the winner of the Epsom Derby that had so far escaped his long roll call of honours. I followed carefully for 3 years the progress of the colt who became Galileo and I attended the Derby on the day because I believed he would win. We found a 50.00 note on the ground which no one claimed and we duly put it on his nose. His win paid for the day out and the memory will never leave us.

Urban Sea had a decent life span (she was 20) and a pampered life, always adored and loved. But it would have been nice for her to have had a few years simply at grass as a retired heroine. This was to be her last foal before she earned that honour.

She was a grand dame of the highest order. I really hope that her foal gets all the breaks in life and takes his chance at Epsom in 3 years time.

The Racing Post will be doing a tribute to her in Wednesdays paper.

Patsy's Avatar Thanks for letting us race fans know Crucifix. Clearly an outstanding mare, those who care for her will be devastated. Foaling is such a precarious business, so sorry she didn't make it to her well earned retirement.
Will pick up the Racing Post tomorrow..

Camilla's Avatar So very sad to hear about Urban Sea, she looks such a very beautiful Horse. It is wonderful to know that at least she had a decent life.

Best of luck to Urban Sea's little Foal, if she looks anything like her mother than she is another beauty.

Salle de Bain's Avatar Thanks for that Crucifix.
Breeding can bring such joy but also (at times)..utter heartbreak!

Love the story about Galileo and the 50 was obviously meant to be!!

Are you going to Cheltenham?

I am going to Cheltenham, my husband and I are members and would not miss it for anything, although the four days are far more tiring than the old 3 day Festival. We go with a band of friends and have a great time.
