Cowart's Common Room
Black Magic chocs - retro

see here

I had a hankering for Black Magic - my dad used to buy my mum a box every week when I was child. Yes I know its Lent and we are on a diet but I have slipped by the wayside...Embarassed

Anyway, WHAT a disappointment these new chocs are - boring flavours all the same and a sort of geometric design on them that is different on each but so similar that you get fed up deciding what each one is and just plump for one!

Who remembers the old Black Magic? Hubbie and I were trying to remember the flavours and shapes -

Coffee creme in a crescent shape.

Brazil nut in a smooth covered nut shape.

Hazelnut - 3 nuts on a crispy base.

Strawberry creme in a strawberry shape.

Caramel in a square with lines on it.

Orange creme in a tear drop shape.

Montelimar (?) - chewy white stuff I didnt like.

I can't remember any more!

I looked online and found the above petition!

Re:
Unpeuloufoque's Avatar I can not remember the chocolates Faith but have dim memory of the adverts! My mother used to love Terrys All gold I doubt they make those now either!

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar I totally agree Faith. And the chocolates are so much smaller and meaner somehow. NOT the same at all. I'll stick to Thorntons!

Re:
Sticking to Thorntons with you, Preseli Mags!

Yes, Faith, I do remember how chocolates used to be. Maybe not the Black Magic, but Milk Tray. Oh, how the Strawberry Cream and Orange Cream have changed. Nothing like they used to be. Now more praline based.

Anyone remember Dairy Box? Can't get that now, either. And Nux bars? And Amazin Bars. And Fry's Five Boys. Now I am showing my age. Laughing I feel a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane coming on.

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar The only one that seems not to have changed much is Quality Street. I quite like Celebrations too, and Roses. But you can't get a proper box of chocolates with a Monet on it any more. Dairy Box used to be my favourite, CH.

Re:
LittleBrownDog's Avatar Oh, yes - why do they have to change everything? Interestingly, I did see a big BOGOF display for valentines (valentines? why would you need to buy one, get one free, unless you were double dealing Confused) in our local Somerfields with both Black Magic and All Gold, so they are still around. And although Quality Street don't look as though they've changed, they're definitely not as nice as they used to be - brazil nuts in those purple ones seem to be invariably tiny Shocked and those nice triangular ones are not nearly as yummy as they used to be.

Other chocs I remember from my youth are: Caramac bars, Walnut Whips and Spangles (not really chocs, I know...)

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Absolutely. Faith! Have signed the petition. My favourite was always the orange cream - but really I liked all of them. Did you know that nearly all the lasting chocolate brands - Fry's, Kit-Kat, Mars Bar etc were all created within a few years of each other in the 1930s?

Re:
Milla's Avatar never liked black magic, apart from about 2 fudgey/caramelly ones. All Gold even worse. oh dear Sad

Re:
Frances's Avatar You all are really testing my decision to give up chocolate for Lent! I love all the brand names and the descriptions of shapes and fillings.

Perhaps our similar boxed assortments are Whitman's Sampler (that had a box with a cross stitch motif) and Russel Stover.

How many weeks until Easter? xo

Re:
Faith's Avatar Mmm LBD loved Caramac. I used to go with my father to pick up my big sister from the London train when I was little and he used to give me money to buy Caramic from the station stall. All without Mummy knowing!

Re:
Milla's Avatar am sure these things are all made differently now - they're so SWEET for starters!

Re:
Patsy's Avatar Does anyone remember that you could get a selection of milk chocolates all joined together in one bar? Or am I just imagining that?
And something that had lime cracknel in it?? Quite different to peppermint Aeros.
But isn't it a travesty that the black shapes in Sports Mixtures are no longer proper liquorice but blackcurrant flavour Sad
