Cowart's Common Room

Why is it that every Christmas the most popular toys always seem to sell out? Why don't manufacturers make more knowing that such items will be hard to come by? Last year it was Wii - my mum's present for Amy and I ended up buying it off Ebay and paying an extra 20 just so we could have it in time for Christmas Day. This year it's a doll called Roxanne. They're huge toddler size dolls, quite sweet and Amy loves them. There's 3 to collect and of course Amy wants the most popular one. They've been retailing in Argos at 20-ish and on Ebay for around 40 + p&p. Am I missing the point here?

Faith's Avatar Oh Crystal, I do sympathise. When my girls were collecting Beanie Babies I could never understand the shortage of the popular ones... cos if they made more, more people could buy = more money for them! So no you are not missing the point.... I don't know what it is. Maybe the manufacturers don't realise how popular a particular toy will be. I hope you manage to get the doll for a reasonable price for Amy.

Faith's Avatar PS Which one is it that Amy wants? Put the power of the Coo behind it and maybe someone can get you one, and all you'll have to pay extra will be the postage.

Exmoorjane's Avatar It happens every year, doesn't it, with these 'It' toys. Yes, do tell us the precise model - who knows, there might be one lurking in some benighted shop in a high street near us! My BIL said World Monopoly was sold out in Llandudno but found it here....OK, so maybe not in the same stratosphere.....

Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar Aw, thanks you two. I've managed to get one on Ebay after all. Just bid and waited at the computer for half an hour to make sure I wasn't outbid! And amazingly enough, I won the item. Usually, when I bid on ebay, I get to the very last minute and someone outbids me but no one did on this occasion.

Patsy's Avatar It's a common gripe in our house too CJ.
A few years ago my husband got up at 6 am to go to a Toys R Us where it was rumoured that there would be a delivery of the mythical Thunderbirds Tracy Island, the "IT" toy of that year and scarcer than hens' teeth. It was of course top of my son's list for Santa so it had to be found...
A tray of doughnuts as a bribe to the manager and the deed was done!

Update: that same Tracy Island was sold for 2 by same son at a car boot sale a few weeks ago Confused
There's a lesson for us parents here...
