Cowart's Common Room
Followers

I don't get them. Well, I do. I don't normally meddle with the bowels of my blog, but I spotted something today about a number of followers so I clicked on something and a list of people came up who apparently follow my blog. I say aparently because I only recognised about 3 names, (one a Cooer!) and just wondered who all the others are since they've never commented, and how did they find me. So what is this following lark. I realise I've noticed them on other people's blogs, "I follow ..." and never quite understand why they've only picked out half a dozen when I've seen their name commenting on others etc, and why people say they follow (mine, for instance) but never leave a comment. Kinda spooky. So what's it all about then, Alfie?

Re:
LittleBrownDog's Avatar What indeed? Have just popped over to your blog for a peek, but cannot spot followers (obviously invisible to the non-followed Wink)

Not totally sure what it means, but imagine it's a bit like people bookmarking you (ouch Shocked - sounds a bit like what The Boy refers to as a wedgie). Cannot shed any light, I'm afraid, but highly envious that you have a number, while I only have two Mad . (Mind you, I do know both of mine (albeit in a cyber kinda way).

Re:
Elizabethd's Avatar Apparently , if you follow someone's blog, each new entry is brought up on the sidebar of your own blog, if you see what I mean.....trails off having not explained it at all well.

Re:
Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar I have a few followers who never comment but as I don't have one of those bloggy reading trace the blogger bars, I don't know whether they do actually read my blog.

Re:
Unpeuloufoque's Avatar I have some no idea how they do it or what they are.. also not sure why as I havent blogged a word for months..perhaps they just want to make sure it stays that way..unblogged and silent..!! ANYWAY Milla your blog is well worth following!

Re:
ChrisH's Avatar I'm glad you asked, Milla, as I haven't the foggiest... also - is it just me being horrible? - I feel that sometimes (not suggesting it is at all in your case) that it's a question of scratching each other's backs?? I have a sidebar for the Novel Racers because that's the etiquette of the group but I just have the thingy for Purplecoo because I'd end up with an infinite list down the side of my blog. Also, if I boiled it down to the ones I regularly read it would mean leaving some folks out and, being Mrs Afraid-To-Upset-Anyone, I'd be worried about hurting someone's feelings....
Oh dear, think I will have to go off and have a little lie down!

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar Nooo.....I know, I know (hand shoots up!). At least I t hink I do. It's in addition to the sidebar thingy...which you set up yourself. If you go on Blogger set up you can add a 'follow my blog' thing for your sidebar.....then if people like your blog they click on it and add their little avatar. Equally you can click on their Follow my blog thingy and then when you go onto your Blogger page you get to see their latest posts. Sorry, really explaining th is very badly. I think it's a way of telling people you like their blogs except I can't do it with a lot of people as they don't have the widget thingy on their blogs (adn I don't know how you get to follow if that isn't there).
This is clear as mud....
Actually I use it more to track non-PC blogs as I can't be parsed to put any more on my original tracking do-dah.
Oh shut up Jane - this isn't helping anyone......wanders off to do something more productive!

Re:
Fennie's Avatar I try and follow your blogs, Milla, but they are a bit like buses. You wait a long time and then two come along together. So I am usually about six weeks late in commenting. But I would welcome the chance to know when you post and confess to not reading the 'I have blogged' window everyday. Of course, these followers might be Arpanet - the US military I believe - who scan a great many things, or so I am told, on the trail of desperadoes and their evil doings. But I don't think that waspishness towards a rather delicate and lovely bundle of fur really counts.

Re:
LittleBrownDog's Avatar Agree with Chris - the whole thing is an etiquette minefield, and it's all too easy to upset people by leaving them out. However, I have just discovered a handy tool on blogger, which lets you put a mini snippet of other people's blogs on your sidebar so you can see when they've updated theirs - works very well as a sort of bus timetable for the Milla route, Fennie, though do feel slightly worried about missing people out, too. Am trying it out for size at the moment...

LittleBrownDog's Avatar ...and meant to add, in case anyone popped over to check, it's very much a work in progress at the moment, so important people may well not be on it yet... EmbarassedEmbarassedEmbarassed

Re:
SallysChateau's Avatar I can't cram anymore into the side anyway BUT I reckon its a crafty ploy myself as there is a tool too so that you can show the avators of people who follow your blog, presumably enticing people to wander off and come into your blogspot, as if faffing off via comments isn't enough to guarantee a less than productive day if you are inclined to slouch at the earliest opportunity.

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar I love those little avatars - they cheer me up (see, I'm a total saddo)....but indeed I do go wandering off as of course one wants to see who has the great good taste and discrimination to want to follow one;s blog in the first place! Wink

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar I am actually quite impressed just how much work the people on Blogger are doing - sadly I haven't had the time to keep up with mine, but am aware that there are all sorts of new features.

I daren't check to see if I have followers - what if I don't Sad and why would I I haven't blogged for ages.

Re:
Milla's Avatar ah, yes, I could show them off, but don't want to embarrass them, and I haven't got any things like that mainly because I don't want to leave people off and offend them and also because I can't quite be parsed to work it out. But they don't seem to tie in with the sidebar thing, because I sometimes see mine on other people's - tend to be non-cooers, and they obviously get alerted when I've bus-blogged (!) as they kindly scurry over and comment, but it's not those names who are my followers, they don't marry up at all. Weird.

Re:
Elizabethm's Avatar I think jane has explained it better than I can. I have the list LBD mentions which automatically orders itself with the most recent of the blogs i like on the top (it is called Bloggers List in Gadgets on the page where you can customise your blog). There is also a followers list on there. If people I like have a Follow this blog thingy, I do (Kitty for example). i am a bit puzzled by the people who follow mine because lots of them dont seem to comment. Perhaps some people like to read but dont bother to comment? Don't know.
Clear as mud.
But the list thingy is great for being alerted to one of milla's buses.
