Cowart's Common Room
Going to California

Uploaded Image

I'm getting in the mood by listening to the songs we used to play when I spent weekends in Laurel Canyon as a teenager. Led Zeppelin's Going To California comes to mind, and California by Joni Mitchell, her Ladies Of The Canyon and Hotel California by The Eagles. I loved Crosy Stills Nash and Young in those days, and listened to Suite Judy Blue Eyes about Judy Collins. Linda Ronstadt Desperado, and does anyone remember Jackson Browne or The Flying Burrito Brothers?

I'm going to California for 10 days to visit my brother and his wife and family for Thanksgiving. I moved to England 30 years ago and since then we have not seen much of each other. It's been six years this time. Far too long, but flights get more expensive, things happen, and time flies.

He has retired near San Diego, in the mountains, near the sea, if that makes any sense. Very pretty and temperate climate. They have coyote, mountain lions and deer on the estate. Their cats stay indoors because otherwise things get them at night. It is odd going there because it is not where we grew up, so although I am going 'home' it is not really our home either. I long to return to San Francisco and look upon the Golden Gate Bridge, across to Sausilito, once more. Maybe one day.

It will be fun to see them again and odd to be away from home for so long. We usually have fast short trips to ireland or elsewhere in England.

We are doing a tourist view of Hollywood soon after arriving. That will really be a laugh. I've not been for 35 years. I used to work in the rock music industry over there when I was a wee young thing and we hung out on the Sunset Strip and in Laurel Canyon with the latest acts. Lots of memories and I expect the City of the Angels will not be the same as it was in those days. Even then it was pretty scary!

I will miss all of you, but probably will not get much time on a PC while there. So, I wish you all a very happy beginning to December, and good run up to Christmas and I will check in when home again.

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar Very envious here. My sister used to live in California - in Santa Ana, Orange County. We used to visit. She and I did that tourist trip to Hollywood. We walked down Rodeo Drive and looked at the shops - didn't dare go in! Did all the other stuff as well. Great fun.
She was run over and killed by a truck driver when out jogging one morning eight years ago. Still miss her. Sorry to put a damper on your joy but it brought it all back. Have a good time - wish it was me.

Re:
TIGGYWINKLE's Avatar I envy you Crucifix. My sister flew to LA this morning for Thanksgiving too. The weather is great. While I love Sausilito, I have to say that San Diego is my favourite area in CA. Have had lovely lunches in the old hotel with the red turrets(name has slipped my mind)at La Jolla. It is so pretty there. Also had memorable lunch and visit to Rosines family Restaurant in Monterey. Have never seen anything like her cakes, and she has written a lovely cookbook. http://www.rosinesmonterey.com. You must be very excited. Have a wonderful time

Re:
Frances's Avatar I know that you will have a fabulous time.

One of my favorite relatives lives in San Diego. And keeps me aware of where the ever-challenging forest fires are. (I also keep an eye out.)

Jackson Browne is actually having a bit of a resurgence, going on tour and all that.

Won't bore you with more old time music stuff, but do wish you a fine visit. Take pictures!

Westerwitch's Avatar Ooo extra envious now . . . I spent Thanksgiving in Montana about four years ago - stayed with a friend and we had a fabulous family time - one of those memories that will be there to warm me for a very long time
