Cowart's Common Room
B****y Cross

Coo I'm flipping cross and shaking here. It's a filthy dark wet night and I'm just getting some tea ready. The door bell goes, the dogs go potty and i can see through the glass front door two tall figures in what looks like black uniform. Heart in my mouth I open the door expecting two policemen. { Both L and OH are working tonight ] Sorry and I do not mean to insult anybody's faith but it was two Jehovah's Witnesses.

I'm not sorry to say that I soon told them where to go in a very unladylike fashion. What are they thinking being out in the dark wearing identical black anoraks.

Crystal Jigsaw's Avatar I can imagine that must have been quite unnerving, Toady. Hope you are calming down now.

Withy Brook's Avatar OMG how could they be so stupid and unthinking? That is evil, Toady. I have never liked them, but respected their belief - but that was gross.

Faith's Avatar I don't think they think like other people - they are just so focused on spreading the Word. I used to get them a lot where I used to live because it was just a street away from their Kingdom Hall.

Salle de Bain's Avatar That must have been really un-nerving.

I have to admit, that although I respect the fact that other people are entitled to follow their own chosen religions, these guys shouldn't have to hard sell it on people's doorsteps!!

Lawyerlady's Avatar very frightening Toady, deep breath and glass of wine !

Elizabethd's Avatar I quite agree with you Toady, that was very frightening, and very stupid of them.

Posted by: Elizabethd on 8th Nov 2008 at 09:17PM

Yes, I agree too. I think the days of missionaries knocking on front doors ought to be over. It is just too scary, both for them and for us!

Cait's Avatar That is awful Toady. I would have been just as shaken by those two, one always thinks the worst. Also they could be bogus JW's.

M contacted the local Jehovah's Witnesses and told them never to call at our place and they don't now.

I actually think all door to door salespeople should be banned and I include sellers of religions.

Frances's Avatar Yes, Toady, I am so sorry for your fright. I do agree with Faith that these two people were most likely totally unaware of the effect that they were creating.

Here I am looking for silver lining in rain clouds, but maybe it is a way to remind all of us to not only think of what We are doing, seeking, wishing, but simultaneously, to the degree possible, to take others' feelings into consideration.

Not easy, but always a great goal.

Wishing you pleasant dreams, Toady ... and also still wishing that some day we can go to a boot sale together, with you leading the way!

Camilla's Avatar Godness Toady, that must have been so unerving for you, I am very wary of people that come to my door, only yesterday a chap came to the back of cottage instead of knocking at front, he even opened the big field gate which said BEWARE OF THE DOG.! and walked right through to back of cottage, and who was it............. yep....... Jehovah Witness, HL answered it, and I can tell you he was not a happy bunny.

Unpeuloufoque's Avatar Next time Toady tell them you are a RC and would love to discuss the good bokk.. for some reason that makes them run a mile!!

SallysChateau's Avatar I would have done the same Toady, we get them here all the time, why don't they just give up ? leaflets in French and English.

Westerwitch's Avatar I think it should be made illegal - other people don't go around preaching at you uninvited and as for knocking on the door when it is dark that is harassment.

Exmoorjane's Avatar At our old place we used to get them occasionally and by the time they had huffed and puffed their way up our drive they could barely speak.
When I was younger I used to say I would love to debate the apocrypha with them - that seemed to have the same effect as UPL's RC comment....
But, seriously, it IS frightening to see people like that when you're alone and thinking they are official. Sorry you had such a scare.
