Cowart's Common Room

My eldest son who works at the local garage has just ‘phoned me to say he has bought me a wee car...... .. to force me into driving again……well he didn’t actually say that, but I know that’s the plan……

The first thing I asked him was the colour……….’what about asking the make’ he said…….oh, er yes……it’s a Vauxhall something (forgotten already) 5 door hatchback.

I am soooooo scared of driving, I am feeling like a jelly……please, please could you send me tons and heaps of extremely potent purple vibes……

Oh Gawd……….I am feeling quite ill…….(yes, I know how pathetic.)

Milla's Avatar Yikes, glad I'm not near you. Is there somewhere you can practise first? We used to use car parks in our youth but of course with 24 hour shopping they're harder to track down. Take it easy at first, no rush hour stuff, no busy roads. It'll probably come swarming back.
And, what IS the colour? First things first. 5 doors is good. Don't know about Vauxhalls. Good luck! your fellow road users will need it, heh heh. Laughing

Bradan's Avatar Gee, thanks Milla, you're just so kind and caring.......but you did make me chortleLaughing

No car parks, rush hour stuff or busy roads......I live on a remote island.......which is what makes it so difficult, because every burger will know it's me making an eejit of myself

It's green...

Woozle1967's Avatar Good luck to you........... and you fellow islanders! (She ducks)Laughing

Bayou's Avatar Oh, Bradan, think of all the independance and freedom that that green car is going to give you. Take your Cool out and put a hat on or a scarf and nobody will know that it is you --- for a while. Do you want me to send a St. Christophorus to you --- some people do believe in it...
Lucky you! They must have some trust in you, so do not disappoint them! Razz

Milla's Avatar oh Gawd, had forgotten about the island. It's ok then, just you and the cliff top roads... (seat belt on, remember - just how long IS it?? Since I mean, not your seat belt).

Jayem's Avatar What a wonderful gift! Your son obviously has confidence in you, now you need to find confidence in yourself ...... take it slowly but tell yourself you CAN do it [ and then think of all the blithering idiots who do it without a backward glance] and you'll be fine. Go girl!

Posted by: Jayem on 5th Nov 2008 at 03:57PM

Faith's Avatar Green, my fave colour, got to be good. I was like that once Bradan. In between Hub1 and Hub2, I had no car and didnt drive for about five years. Your son drives I assume so get him to take you to a quiet place and just practice. Go very slow and you will be ok. It'll be worth it in the end. Everyone needs to be able to drive, and you can drive, so just take it steady. Don't worry about what other driver's think - if they think you are slow, then let them overtake. Good luck!

Mountainear's Avatar Lucky you - what a thoughtful son. You will be fine. There must be hundreds of far worse places to learn to drive.

Frances's Avatar Your new green car sounds lovely, and I am sure that before long you'll be fully enjoying it. (It's been decades since I had a car or even a drivers license, but just know that if ever I will need that skill and official permit again, it will happen.)

Don't worry about what others think of you (sure that you will be a very careful driver); however, please do always be a defensive driver, and think about all that those other drivers might not be thinking about!

Toady's Avatar Know just what you mean I've lost my nerve too. Heaps of Purple vibes to you and let us know how it goes. Perhaps it will spur me on.

Inthemud's Avatar Go out with an instructor for a refresher lesson.

Deep breathes and you'll be fine.

Big purple hugs coming your way

Muddie x

Fennie's Avatar You could always paint the car blue. Then no-one would know it was you!

Posted by: Fennie on 5th Nov 2008 at 05:55PM

Elizabethm's Avatar You will be absolutely fine I am sure. and an island with no rush hours etc is the perfect place to learn! A very kind and considerate son I would say. go for it!

Bradan's Avatar Oh yes, def need a St. Christophorous.....I was going to slosh a gallon of holy water over it anyway....

I think I feel worse now, because everyone thinks I can do it ...except me Sad

I have driven a bit in recent years.....a very liittle bit....

Ivy's Avatar When hubbies uncle died unexpectedly his wife suddenly wasn't just widowed she also lost her only way of transport. She had not driven a car herself for more than 30 years. Her children persuaded her to take a few driving lessons with an instructor and now she goes everywhere with her little Volkswagen!

Snailbeachshepherdess's Avatar Paint the car purple with a couple of red 'go faster' stripes and just sit in it and rev it up like mad and plaay loud music - no need to actually GO anywhere - but your street cred will be second to none!Laughing

Withy Brook's Avatar Bradan - get on in there. You are on an island with very little traffic. Just take it slowly and gradually build up the speed as you gain confidence. YOU WILL BE FINE Sorry - shouldn't shout but I really mean it.

Posted by: Withy Brook on 5th Nov 2008 at 08:42PM

Westerwitch's Avatar Oooooo you poor jelly you. Yes you can do it and once you have done it once it will get easier and easier. Take this from someone who used to have to do a trip twice so that she knew where she was going the second time . . .Blink

Posted by: Westerwitch on 5th Nov 2008 at 08:58PM

Bradan's Avatar Yes it's a small island and it's only got small roads..... single track with passing places and berludy great ditches at the side full of water and Gawd knows what else......and people here always drive as though they're going through a field at high speed, breaking the speed limit......I don't think they know there's a speed limit.......

Posted by: Bradan on 5th Nov 2008 at 10:34PM

Cait's Avatar I have a five door Vauxhall and it is blue! I always ask what colour first, just like you.

Take it slowly and you will gain in confidence?

Posted by: Cait on 5th Nov 2008 at 11:18PM

I learned to drive ina field and then ina large car park where I could go round and round, park and backwards. Was pretty boring but did the trick! Find somewhere with litle traffic and try it, it is fun! I am sure you will be fine once you get going.

Pondside's Avatar You can do it - I have faith in your ability and your nerve. I'd lend you my car if you came over here!
