Cowart's Common Room

Gordon Bennett! I go away for a few days and the place falls apart!! The force 10 gales took out both my cheapo plassy greenhouses, and spread potted plants far and wide. I was so proud of my liitle newspaper pots too (got the idea from Toby on Gardener's World). It took me a whole morning to make them and sow a sweet pea in each one....grrrrrr!

Not only that....I made a new raised bed for my garlic just before I went away. The cat-proof cover I made blew off in my absence, and I might as well put WC signs up on it now. 'Toms' and 'Queens' perhaps......?

Just to cap it all, I've just been into the sitting room where Barney has chewed the ends off of my bamboo knitting needles, which were hard to source here. Have sanded the ends down with a bit of wet & dry, and apart from the loss of an inch or two, they might be OK!!

Does anyone know how to knit a muzzle?

I'm making Spelt bread and riceflour dumplings this morning for a family member who can't eat flour......deB is at the Golf Course.

Off to sort out the garden carnage now, and then plant the last of the 1,000 bluebell bulbs whilst the sun is still out....
What are you up to this morning?

KittyB's Avatar Oh no! What a shame, all that hard work...
Those newspaper pots - you don't fancy giving a quick tutorial on the Gardening forum do you? I missed that episode and can't seem to find out how to make them... would be awfully kind...

Re:
Pondside's Avatar What a blow (and no pun intended!Embarassed)
What am I doing? Well, the clocks were turned back last night, so here I sit at 0530, up like the alarm clock that I am, while everyone else enjoys a good sleep-in. I've made a list of all the houses at which we campaigned yesterday (The Great Dane is running for District Council, as some will remember) and am getting the flyers ready for today's assault on the western areas. This is a huge, sparsely populated district, so we put a lot of miles on our tires and our shoes!

Re:
Frances's Avatar What a shame to have had all that damage!

However, the 1,000 bluebell bulbs sound like the beginning of some beautiful sights to come. Love the way that you fixed those needed and just kept on going forward.

Re:
Cait's Avatar You can make a muzzle from a pair of tights, make a figure of eightSmile We used to have a stud dog so know about muzzling bitches in order that they could be raped (how cruel we were!).

Seriously though, I am sorry about your greenhouse. We bought a cheapo one and we kept losing panes in the wind, then it flooded (pics on my blog) so I have given the damned thing away.

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Ooooooo what a rotten thing to come home to. Cats hate the smell or oranges - I used to put orange peel around my plants and it worked . . . just as well . . . cos they were indoor plants Confused

Wow 1000 bluebells how long will that take you.

I have been out photographing frosty stuff . . . but should have taken the tripod . . . too much camera shake . . . well what do you expect after a Saturday night and drowning my sorrows that Austin has left X-Factor Sad

Re:
Bayou's Avatar Shocked Sorry for the damage you had, Sal. For the sweet peas and sunflowers seeds, I collect empty toilet paper rolls. Much less fuzz than newspaper rolls.

Re:
Elizabethm's Avatar Oh no! What a mess to come home to. Hope you are well on the way to sorting it out.
I have a stinking cold so I am sitting by the fire, wanting to get on with all sorts but feeling too sorry for myself!

Re:
Wizzard's Avatar I am so sorry about the devastation.
However, what I learned with those greenhouses is to put a brick (or something heavy) on the bottom shelf. That solved my problem for me
