Cowart's Common Room
Raising an eyebrow

Thank you all for joining me - now sit up straight and look into the mirrors on your desks.

Brush your hair away from your eyebrows . . . AHHHHh yes I see KittyB has been working hard.

Stare hard at your reflection and imagine this is the person you are going to raise your eyebrow at. Breathe deeply and relax your facial muscles. Stare hard at the other person, make and lock on eye contact ensuring you have their full attention

Now raise the eyebrow just an infinitesimal amount . . . too much and you lose the sardonic, questioning look and become surprised - a different lesson altogether. And if you can't raise an eyebrow then rise both almost imperceptibly . . it will get the message across. It is important to keep the rest of the body still otherwise you will distract from the eyebrow movement.

Very good I can see some nice eyebrow raising here . . . now turn to each other and practice.

NO NO not too much. The trick is in keeping the movement small . . . it carries far more weight . . now try again.

Well practise your eyebrow raising Blossom and keep your mind off the tin.

Raise both then Toady - a very SMALL amount.

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar I'm hopeless. Embarassed I've been practising on the children and it's not working. They said: "Mummy can we have some chocolate." I replied with my attempt at the eyebrow and now thery're eating my Green & Blacks! Where am I going wrong?

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Have I walked into the wrong class? I thought it was flouncing on Mondays?
Besides my eyebrows are not independent. They march in step. On up, all up. So, PM, you're not the only hopeless one.

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar My eyebrow is aching. Can I stop now? What's my mark? F? Sad I think I've developed an alarming new wrinkle above my left eyebrow.

Re:
Milkmaid's Avatar I can only raise both together too, my son has great eyebrow mobility, but as he is 10 it's amusing not sexy

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar This is the flouncing class - but we are leading up to it Fennie - plus flouncing is not the whole story.

PM I don't think it works on children you have to shout at them as well which ruins the effect . . .sigh Rolling Eyes

Patsy's Avatar How many calories does some fierce eyebrow knitting use up?
After a few minutes of vigorous activity I'm so exhausted I have to reach for the chocolate...!
And there was supposed to be a weigh-in today too..

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar If you can't do one do both . . .sigh . . .

Patsy it should be a gentle raising of the eyebrow - you look as though you are about to burp violently.

Re:
KittyB's Avatar Impeccably plucked too, UPL.
You can keep that chap, WW, not my type, looks a bit fey and small, so I won't be fighting you for him.
Now, on to the flouncing. I've been practicing for about 35 years so I have nearly perfected it now... perhaps you could offer just a few more tips?

Westerwitch's Avatar No toooooo high Un Peu - good look - but the eyebrow should only move a small amount - less is more!

Ok dispondant as I apparently raise mine too high so am employing Mr Rickman as a private tutor....goodness what that man can convey with one slight flair of the nosrtils and an infintesimle eyebrow flicker...are we doing nostril flaring later miss?

Re:
Lawyerlady's Avatar Yikes! can eyebrows drop off?

Posted by: Lawyerlady on 28th Apr 2008 at 08:40PM

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Yes to nostril flaring. Mr Rickman is a good example of how to do things - not the flounce though. He gave a particularly good look in Robin Hood - when he was being married and everyone was interrupting him.

Re:
Patsy's Avatar Over the years I thought I had got quite good at flouncing .. Quite difficult to flounce off in high dudgeon when you are only of low stature.
But I've met my match in my younger son.
He can flounce to Olympic standard but then he was taught by a master..

Re:
Pondside's Avatar I've just come home from dinner, and find, as usual, that you lot have worn yourselves out and have gone to bed. Just so you know - I'm flouncing around the kitchen with three feather boas, raising alternate eyebrows and flaring my nostrils! (always was an over-achiever!)

Posted by: Pondside on 29th Apr 2008 at 05:01AM

Re:
Kat's Avatar I'm here with Pondside, nostrils a-flaring ever so slightly, alternating between lifting one eyebrow, then both...just one side works in the independent mode...Embarassed but RATS! where's the mirror when you need it? Is it subtle enough to make a big impression? Pass me a boa, Pondside and let's flounce! I fear my unplucked brows may not make the grade!
