Cowart's Common Room
Update on Angel Dove

In case you didnt know Angel was saved by me from the claws of death late yesterday afternoon when I happened to go outside just as the hawk was swooping on the flock.

She lost feathers and was scratched but didnt seem too damaged and I put her in the dog box hospital to get over the shock and recover overnight.

I was going to wait til Hub3 comes in at 10.00 to help me ring and release her but as she was desperate to get out I did it myself - the ringing with difficulty, Angel being rather feisty.

I put her on the feeding table and she walked around a little, fluffing up her wings and then attempted to fly. And discovered she can't! ...... Oh dear, this is NOT good. She is now in the garden alternating between the grass and a very low perch she can hop up to.

Now, of course, she is a sitting target for the hawk. Any ideas on what to do?

Of course some of you may be thinking I should have let the hawk have her in the first place, and I agree the hawk must eat too, but I couldnt have prevented what happened even if I had wanted the hawk to catch a dove as my coming out of the door caused the hawk to abandon her and fly off.

When we had Lily injured, it took quite a long time before she could fly again, and then I just left her on the hedge or top perch all day and put her to bed in the dovecote every night. Now I am worried about the hawk, and to a much lesser extent, the dog. He at least knows he shouldnt chase the doves, and mostly doesnt.

The photo is not of Angel of course, though I have taken some of her.Uploaded Image

Unpeuloufoque's Avatar EEK do not know what to suggest Faith! Will it be possible to recapture her or would catching her cause her even more distress? Poor dove and poor you! I think alas you may have to keep an eye on her and let nature sort it out. Good luck.

Westerwitch's Avatar Oh Faith I hope she will be ok . . . does she need to go to the vet, or Wildlife Aid . . .

Faith's Avatar I don't see what the vet could do, WW. Yes, I could recapture her UPL without much difficulty but don't really want to keep her in a confined box. Doubt if Hub3 will want to make a pen for her when he comes in after a night's work!

Inthemud's Avatar Oh crumbs Faith, no idea.
Is her wind broken? Could it be mended by vet?
She needs to be under cover in safety somehow, doesn't she?

Do you know anyone with a aviary?

Westerwitch's Avatar Well there is obviously a reason why she can't fly so hopefully a vet would be able to find out why. She would also need to be protected whilst she can't fly - Wildlife Aid would be able to offer her shelter and treatment with as little stress as possible. She may have broken bones and be in pain and that needs to be dealt with. Right now she is just a sitting duck for the hawk.

Camilla's Avatar Poor little Angel, all has given good advice here Faith, I do think Wildlife Aid may perhaps be able to offer shelter, I just hope she is not in pain. You obviously will not be able to leave her out in open while that nasty Hawk is about, keeps us informed Dear Faith.
