Cowart's Common Room
Foxy week end

I have had the best week end since Mum passed on 3 weeks ago, so far. OH and I went up home for the week end. We decided that we have been so busy sorting things, that we would just relax, light a fire, leave the study curtains open, the outdoor light on and the remnants of a chicken carcase strategically placed where we could see if Mrs Fox visited. Bang on time at 10.15 [she keeps summer time] Madam arrived, gulped down a goodly portion of it, then took the remainder in her mouth to bring back to her cubs.

Have spotted her den and have slapped a preservation order on it, OH being of a mind to get a JCB in and move a lot of briars. One island of same shall remain untouched. She reluctantly left one tiny piece of chicken behind and off she went. In the interim, the biggest black cat I have ever seen came from behind the bushes and cleared up. Mme Fox returned, and left disgruntled but not before throwing a disgusted look at the window.

Up yesterday very bright and early [is this really me?] and we sat over a leisurely breakfast of eggs from next door [neighbours hens having found the manual on “How to lay eggs in a henhouse“] toast and outsize mugs of tea in Mum’s tiny kitchen. Glorious. All this serenaded by Bullfinches, Siskins, and Greenfinches. Greenfinches don't visit us here, but then Goldfinches don't come to Mum‘s garden either. He went off to do more sorting, I cried [literally] off and decided to hoover, dust, polish, scrub to my hearts content. I now have two renamed rooms glistening, on the window sills are an assortment of Waterford Crystal dishes which seem to have been the glass du choice for 50% of the completion prizes she entered in the local version of the W.I all of them bearing such engravings as Singing 1996, or Group Singing 1989 or Competition 1975. A drop of lemon juice in the washing water and they are sparkling like rainbows on the window sills.

The afternoon saw the mother and father of all electric storms. OH was gobsmacked, he'd never experienced the like before as the rocks throw back the sound of the thunder, he comes from the flat Midlands. ED and I shared a bottle of a nice Aussie white while himself went off to work. ED and I sat sorting the worlds problems 'til 2 a.m., and another leisurely breakfast with more eggs. We brought out Mum's car, I will be changing it in a few weeks time, when I get the moss off its windows. Meanwhile it will drive me to work.

OH and I sauntered off down to Rathdrum for a delicious meal in Jacob's Well, lovely food - delicious and reasonably priced. Back home and a check-in for e-mails. I shall finish the week end off by watching Foyles War, and so to bed.

Re:
KittyB's Avatar perhaps your hens might like to send my hens that 'how to lay eggs in the henhouse' manual, as all mine do is roost and poo in their nesting boxes!

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar Love watching foxes close up......for several years we watched a vixen bring up her cubs in the next field to our house.....the cubs are so gorgeous.
Love too that we share some birds....I'm entranced by my siskins and goldfinches....now have enticed a few greenfinches in (one of my faves)... Adrian has been nagging at me for years to get into birds but it was your View from the Kitchen Window that got me into the habit.
And, third love in a row, love that you're getting such a kick out of Mammy's house...wouldn't she just love (eek) that too? Smile

Re:
Pondside's Avatar It sounds as though you had a lovely time in your mum's house and little by little are cleaning your way into its heart - or it into your heart!
