Cowart's Common Room

Did anyone watch 'Headcases' last evening, the much vaunted new satirical show on ITV 1? I thought it most disappointing and not a patch on 'Spitting Image.' Both caricatures and humour were crude rather than funny, dumbed down to pointlessness, really; dismally unfunny, in fact. The rich seam of past British satire, it seems, is worked out. They should close the mine rather than serve up such low-grade stuff, which I won't bother watching again.

But then you may all disagree with this cantankerous old curmudgeon's view. After all, I am old enough to remember TW3 and the Frost Report in their black and white brilliance.

Do you remember Tom Lehrer who gave up satire at the time of the Vietnam War? I feel we are in the same situation now.

Tom Lehrer said that the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Peace to Henry Kissinger made political satire obsolete.

Lehrer did write some screamingly funny songs

Toady's Avatar Yes it was awful. So much effort for such poor quality. I too am old enough to remember TW3 and the Frost Report. They don't make them like they used to. Too much PC I'm afraid.

Fennie's Avatar Am a great fan of Tom Lehrer. Have a songbook of his songs. My favourite still has to be the early (and macabre) 'We Shall All Go Together When We Go - every Hottentot and every Eskimo. For we shall all go simultaneous, when the air turns urani -mouse. Yes we'll all go together when we go.'
Only we didn't - Or at least not then - in 1962 or whenever.

I think I caught this last week, and thought much the same as you; a noughties dumbed down version of Spitting Image. They should have left well alone. Rolling Eyes
