Cowart's Common Room
Good Day

The hens are here! Six beautiful ginger pullets (?) point of lay. We thought we were getting ex-battery hens but when we got there the lady had a shed full of pullets she wanted to sell, so six each for me and my sister, and I LOVE them. I have spent all afternoon with them in the garden, listening to their contented clucking and pecking. I have even mastered the art of picking them up - me who hates flapping birds! I feel a blog coming on... V excited...

Re:
Jackofall's Avatar Is the hen house one of Mr Turner's, perchance? Makes ours look rather tatty, though it IS rather tatty anyway. And there's only one hen left to use it.

Re:
KittyB's Avatar Well, yes, all the paraphenalia minus food (as yet) available at North Yorkshire's finest agric merchants! As for names - Agnes, Jennet, Bella, Martha, Vera and Doris. Named after my grannies and their sisters. Can actually only tell Agnes (feisty - gorgeous iridescent orange-ginger feathers on neck) and Vera (fluffy, paler feathers than others) as yet, the other four all look very similar. Give me time and I'll be able to match a name to each of the others!

Re:
Tattie Weasle's Avatar Definately got hen house envy...ne'er mind my girls have to make do and ment as they say...did you know each hen lays an egg that is totally individual to her? I am still trying to work out whose is whose as I have got out of practice of late - too many eggs but not enough to sell. However I have very happy friends and family.
Your girls look wonderful what breed are they?

Re:
Frances's Avatar If all of you who actually have come in contact with hens feel so enthusiastic, you can only imagine what I feel, writing from a totally hen-free environment.

And still thinking about Tattie's comment about the coutour egg!

Just fabulous! And I really like the names, too.

Re:
See what you have done now Kittyb? Created henhouse envy.
To colour co-ordinate you need some Lavender Aracanas, beautiful dove grey birds that lay bluegreen eggs

Re:
Beautiful hens Kitty, They have certainly fallen on their feet with such a lovely home. You have made me impatient now to get on with getting some myself.

For anyone who has a soft spot for hens, have you seen this website?

I have now blogged about them, boringly at length, with pics...

Re:
When I kept hens I got hooked on pure breeds and had some lovely ones My favourite cockerel was a Duckwinged Yokohama, classic japanese birds beautiful colours and extraordinatry tail feathers. In Japan they are kept in special runs so that they can only walk one way so as not to destroy the feathers. It is the bird beloved of artists in Japan.

I used to buy fertile eggs from a rare breeds farm and pop them under a bantam
