Cowart's Common Room
boxing day

Can any one explain to me what boxing day is (apart from December 26th) my dad used to tell us as kids that it was the day when the King or Queen of England had to go fist fighting with the Prime Minister Shocked (never believed him, not even as a kid in primary school) Mum always told us that it was the day money was put into charity boxes to be distributed among the poor. (who has any money left AFTER Christmas?) Someone suggested it was the day all the Christmas decoration was returned to the boxes that were stowed away until next Christmas... you see I am too confused to google it and I am sure that your explanations will be much nicer than the google ones.

Withy Brook's Avatar I love this mixture of definitions of Boxing Day! Do you call it that in Germany?

Ivy's Avatar No to us it is the second day of Christmas.Very boring. But my parents ,having lots of friends in England ,introduced us to some of the British customs from early childhood. Sometimes - just to tease us-with explanations like the one about the Prime minister and the Queen..

Faith's Avatar I always assumed it was when the employers (in the olden days) gave their employees their Christmas bonuses in the form of money, presented in boxes.
