Cowart's Common Room
Bad times and Barcelona

Well, the last couple of weeks have been sheer hell. Mainly thanks to Size Zero Mother..... Also not helped by hearing that a dear friend has finally lost her battle with the horrible Big C. And other friends have had their entire organic goose herd (for Duchy Organics) stolen (for the third time) - and say they won't farm geese again. AND, I have just come back home to find Dulverton very sombre as another friend (though not a close one) has been killed. Her husband somehow (details not clear yet) ran over her in the tractor. Just impossible to take in really.
So not a good fortnight, to put it mildly. However, the only bright light is that we ARE going to Barcelona - very early tomorrow. So I will be out of touch for a few days.

Pipany's Avatar Oh Jane what a truly dreadful time for you. so sorry to hear about your friend. The Dulverton one does seem too dreadful to contemplate too. You poor thing; enjoy your time away and try to recoup a little xx

Annakarenin's Avatar It never rains but it pours, unfortunately. Hopefully the trip to Barcelona will bring a change, have a great time anyway.

Unpeuloufoque's Avatar Go to Barcelona, go to the magical fountain display at night, buy a large glass of red , sit in the dark and wail away all that grief. Its dark, the classical music is loud and its outdoors and free and no one will notice you sobbing but it will make you feel much better!

You really do sound as if you are having a rough time.

LittleBrownDog's Avatar Dear Jane - so sorry to hear you've been having such a terrible time lately. Hope Barcelona is the tonic you need.

(And just to say, I've popped some of the s. g. in the post to you - it is very well wrapped though - hope you can get into it through all the layers of duct tape! It is very reviving, though.)

LBD xx

Ivy's Avatar Oh Jane I am so sorry. the story about the geese even made it to the German newspapers. Must be terrible for your friend. December was certainly not a good month for you so far. Hope you have a brilliant time in Spain and that you can blind out all the depressing stories at least for hours. And forget about size 0 mum for some days. Have you got no siblings to look after her for some time?

Cait's Avatar I echo what has been said Jane and add my commiserations. Sounds like your trip to Barcelona has come just at the right time. I have never been there but feel it will lift you out of the bad times you are surrounded by at the moment.

Fennie's Avatar Oh poor you! How very sad. Still Barcelona is magic. There's a little restaurant off Las Ramblas - I've forgotten the name - doesn't open until 9pm where you can eat 'Gambas a l'aillo' tiny shrimps served in iron dishes of boiling oilive oil that has been flavoured with garlic and red peppers. Absolutely wonderful but not for the faint hearted. Enjoy yourself.

Exmoorjane's Avatar Thanks, guys......yes, think it is coming at the right time. The whole town is in of our close friends is one of the firemen who had to deal with it - and he's pretty shaken (which says it all).
Wow, Ivy, so the geese thieves made it to the German news?! Poor souls - they had a farm near our old place but the landlord sold up under them and they moved to near Okehampton to start again. But even when they were on the moor, they had several thefts. So upsetting for them as they care so much about their birds. Funnily enough, now I think about it, they were featured in CL a few years back. I was always awestruck by them - at one point they had five children under seven (!) AND did B&B AND did the geese and ducks....they have worked so hard and just don't deserve another slab of bad luck.
LBD - sounds just the ticket! You are a star! Huge thanks.
Un Peu - made me cry just thinking about it.......great suggestion.
All of you, thank you so much - you're the best......catch up with you on our return. jxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Milkmaid's Avatar Oh Jane how dreadful, I dread farm accidents happening, we live and work round such huge machines
S and I have attended 2 funerals recently and sadly I have a 3rd to go to next week, all before Christmas - awful
The goose thing is just dispicable

Exmoorjane's Avatar So very sorry to hear that thoughts are with you....funerals are awful at any time but coming just before Christmas somehow makes it worse.
And yes, for everyone that works with big farm machinery, please be so so careful...... all it takes is one little slip.

Frances's Avatar A very late good evening to you dear Jane.

Have wonderful time in Barcelona, see the Gaudi art ... as much as you can. Treasure the positive, the happiness. (Doesn't mean at all that you aren't also treasuring other bits of life that may not be happy right now.)

Feel stupid stating the obvious to a lady much wise than I am, but really Jane, please do give yourself a get a way.
