Cowart's Common Room
A couple, a few and some

I suspect it's only me and my mother, but does anyone else follow the theory/rule that a couple is two, a few is three and some is four or more?

Faith's Avatar No - to me a couple is of course two. A few depends on what it is:

I've eated a few sweets from the packet - prob at least 6.
A few people are coming over (as spoken by Em) 3 - 4
She only had a few people to her wedding - 10 - 20.

Some is similar, but more than a few.

Cait's Avatar To me a couple is two
A few is a small amount
Some could be anything
Several is quite a few!

If you have a few drinks for example is it always three?? Be honest now....

PS I have just looked up few in my 1960's Concise Oxford Dictionary, (my Bible) and it says Few is not many

KittyB's Avatar Spot on - but add to that several = 7.

Cait's Avatar Several means not many but more than two and the separate things is paramount. Amazing what you learn when you read the dictionary.
I think I really should get out more.
