Cowart's Common Room
3 names I like but would NEVER have called my kids

Morning everyone!

Todays 3 things was inspired by Kitty's doctor naming the baby blog and something SM i think said on Milla's blog comments.

There are lots of names we like but wouldnt or couldnt call our children - so what weird and wonderful names do you like, and why didnt you use them?

My eldest for years and years liked the name 'Blue' for a girl. I think it is appalling. Luckily now she is engaged to a Mr. Bell so won't be able to use it - even if she could persuade him to which I doubt!

Off the top of my head, 3 names I really like but would never have chosen are:

Troy
Demetri
Constance

Over to you....

F X

PS I will do the 3 things up to as near Christmas as I can manage and then i will be stopping. Maybe someone would like to take it over - or maybe you know of another daily 'game' that would be fun?

Re:
Faith's Avatar I like Clementine too Pipany - called one of the visiting doves that name. Thats the good thing, I can call all the doves by names I like whatever they are like!

Re:
Verity
Grace
Bella for very obvious reasons I resisted.

I did have names for the Bumps. Firstborn was Our Herbie and she was Scroggins.

Took a real effort not to turn those into nicknames but I did manage it

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar I used all of my favourite names on my animals before I had my children, so I couldn't use them!

1. Poppy (my corgi).
2. Flora (the Berkshire sow);
3. James (my big brown horse).

Of course we did have a goat called Rosie, but it was a long time ago. (Don't tell Rosie!)

Re:
Tattie Weasle's Avatar Mercedes - just love the name even if most people associate it with a car! Dear Charlie said it would have been the only way we could have afforded one!
Natasha - but our surname sounds too much like mosquito...
Serena - Mum loated it!
Basically never had girls so never had the opportunity.....Sad

Re:
Faith's Avatar My niece is called Verity, Miss P, I think it is a very pretty name.

TW, its funny you should say Mercedes because I was only thinking the other day that my friend's daughter's second name is Mercedes and we teased her about the car at the time. I like it too.

Re:
LittleBrownDog's Avatar Girls: Audrey (yes, honestly - after La Hepburn), Hepzibah - Hebrew name meaning "my delight is in her" and Kismet (Arabic: fate), after the Kurdish midwife who delivered my boy. (Thank goodness it was a boy, you're probably all saying...)

Boys: Edward, Nicholas and Aleksandr - spelt rather pretensiously in the Russian way. (H dismissed all these lovely names, preferring names like Clint and Rock - yes, honestly! Our child remained nameless for ten days because we couldn't agree.)

Re:
KittyB's Avatar Girls:
Lily
Harriet
Flora

Boys:
Rupert (what;s wrong with Rupert, no-one but me likes it)
Xavier (I know, how pretentious, what was I thinking?)
Gabriel

When I was in my early 20s and engaged to the first one, we were going to call our children Liberty and Harlow. How Beckham is that? We were either ahead of our time or just badly lacking in taste!

Re:
Ivy's Avatar Henrietta,
Selina
Amelie

Ferdinand
Christoph
Leo

My husband didn't like any of them . I wasn't even allowed to call MY dog Henrietta.... Couldn't even take the other two as people we knew went for the other two girls names for their daughters.

Re:
Milla's Avatar my girl would have been Lydia. sob. Can't quite stomach mercedes, I'm afraid TW - just too redolent of big motors. Harlow is BAD, Kitty! THough I do like your other names.

Re:
Faith's Avatar I too very much like Lydia - it was one of my names in the running for Em (who isnt called Em of course thats just her initial) Liberty is sweet, but doubt if I would have chosen it. Agree Harlow is awful!

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar I had to come back for more on this one!

I recently met a Seren - very pretty little girl.
I also know a Starra and I once came across a Hope Lemon. I don't know what her maiden name was but it was serendipitous that she married Mr Lemon. Such a perfect name!
My grandmother's middle name was Lydia and I did consider it for one of my daughters.
A former colleague swears he once met parents who called their daughter Chlamydia and I once met a Richard Head. Just never call him Dick. Shocked

Re:
Faith's Avatar Hub3 used to know twin sisters with the surname Christmas. Parents named them Merry and Happy. Luckily they were outgoing girls!

While writing this post, I had a phone call 'Is this the Hilton Hotel?' asked a voice. 'I wish!' I replied. I knew a man once who called his home 'Hilton'. Bit pretentious I thought.
