Cowart's Common Room
Glorious Twelfth

Or not so glorious according to the newspapers. The combination of unseasonal weather, hen harriers, rabbits and the right to roam having left the moors almost with more guns than grouse. I don't know whether to be happy or sad. I did go once in pursuit of a grouse, but it was in an antique shop and stuffed. It sits in our dining room, rather woebegone and worse for wear, despite its glass case, much to J's chagrin. And now there is rain. So my advice to the grouse is to ignore the beaters and remain tucked up under the heather, though no doubt FN could offer better advice. There is a grouse moor I believe in Abergavenney, not that far from us by Scottish standards.

Maybe FN could also offer advice on these harps - 'celtic' harps I think they are called, but they look to me like harps on a diet. A harpist called Bowen played with a couple of his pupils who looked no more than 16 but who were very good indeed. This recently at Lorient. The harps gave a marvellously pure sound and seemed to weave a tune around each other like barber shop singers. I thought them really beautiful. Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar I do believe that's Robin Bowen sitting to the left of the harps, he plays the Welsh triple harp (one set of strings is quite enough for me never mind three!) they are taller than most lever harps so look a little slimmer... wouldn't we all! Laughing

There are huge swathes of grouse moor up here that are out of action because of the wildfires we've had this summer, but I've no doubt they will find a few patches left to go shooting on. Rolling Eyes

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Very muggy weather here today a few spits and spots of rain a while ago. Daughter popped over lunchtime with her woofers so we had a lovely walk over the dunes. Met a lady over the dunes with her dogs who told us that someone else said to her they spied a snake laying in the grass... not sure if it was Adder if so these ones are dangerous. Is this the time of the year when they come out pehaps but I know they love the sun. As we came towards the entrance of the dunes on the way out we met the local shopkeeper here with his little girl who was skipping along the sands with no shoes on and just bangles on her ankles. Her father said she wont wear the shoes.!

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Have a good evening everyone, easy dinner tonight, cheese and tomato pizza, French fries, and beans. Greek Yoghurt, and a glass of Secretary Bird chilled white wine.

Going to watch my favourite drama on TV tonight which is on every Sunday, The Unforgotten, brilliant actress Nicola Walker.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Adders can be dangerous, Camilla, but they are also very shy. I would think the sound of bangles would cause all the adders in the neighbourhood to flee. Unless she trod on one by accident and it couldn't escape.

Pouring with rain here. Just about to have another session clearing the attic.Very Happy

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar Showers off and on all day but none of the forecast thunder.
Daughter rang last night with a wish to come today, so she and husband were here when I got back from church, with loads of raspberries from their allotment.
