Cowart's Common Room
DOVE BITE - Plague

It has certainly felt like the plague has come upon us. Since I told you in the last Dove Bite that Pascal and Mariette died, we have had two more deaths. Poor little Jodie, Mariette and Pan's last baby, died at only 36 days old on the 15th Sept, and the very next day, only a week after Pascal died, Primrose joined him in heaven. So within the space of 9 days, four of my aviary birds were dead. I can hardly believe it - so sad.

Since then, touch wood, the aviary birds have been ok, though several flock birds have died, including a sweet little thing I was doing my best to save. Here he is on the roof.

So who is left still roosting in the aviary tonight? Only Cloud, Pan, April, Sorrel, Solitaire and Nova. Serafina, Sorrel's mate, hasn't come home tonight, and Biba, Nova's sibling, flew off with the flock and has not been seen since so presumed died.

Here is Primrose on her last day.

I can only hope the illness has passed. This is a pretty bird that likes to come in the aviary - hopefully he not exposing himself to infection.

Fennie's Avatar All very sad, Faith. It certainly sounds like a virus. I suppose it isn't possible to isolate the birds and fumigate the aviary?
Could it be a avian flu? And if so might it be catching? (By you I mean). So sorry for you as I know how much your birds mean to you.Sad

Camilla's Avatar So sorry to hear the sad news Faith, terribly sad about your darling birds.

Do you think perhaps it was a virus they had?

How is Lily Rose? I believe she stays in the Aviary?

Big hug for you Faith.

Faith's Avatar Fennie, I did feel that I might have to fumigate the aviary but it seems the illness has passed.

Withy, although I have never had such a thing before, I suppose it is just the way of things - the weaker or unlucky will die if an illness is going round. I just don't know why.

Camilla, Lily Rose flew off a while ago, having recovered enough to fly.

Lampworkbeader's Avatar Faith, this terrible! We have had a similar sort of infection in our wild birds around here. It seems it particularly affects greenfinches.

Faith's Avatar Well we don't seem to have greenfinches round here - but it does make the pigeons poop green!
