Cowart's Common Room
The Essex Serpent

By an overwhelming number of first choices, The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry is our Purple Coo Book Group Autumn Read 2017. It's such a popular choice, I'm thinking Sunday 3rd December will give us all plenty of time to start making our comments. I hope that suits you as I've a head start. I bought the book for a friend when it first came out and ended up keeping it myself. Wink As for what I thought about it, mum's the wordExclamation

Our second book club choice is that bibliographer's autobiography, Claire Tomalin's, A Life of my Own. And as usual we can start making comments about the book whenever we choose.

As for me, I'm going to read Swing Time and Skin Deep while you are all enjoying The Essex Serpent (or otherwise- I can't wait to find out what you think of the book. It had tremendous hype when it first came out and it will be interesting if you think it is justified.)

Happy reading
love Lampie

Re:
KitKatCot's Avatar I'm pleased you said 'It had tremendous hype when it first came out and it will be interesting if you think it is justified.'

I think I have mentioned before that the 'Hype' that books get on first publication really puts me off.

'You have to read this book'

'The best book you will ever read'

'Already taken up to be the next film blockbuster'

etc, etc.

I'm sure '50 Shades of Grey' made it's author a lot of money, but was it a work of literature?

I didn't read 'Swing Time' because when I was perusing books in Waterstones a very pleasant young man (employee) suggested that I may like it. Why? just because it was No 2 on the bestsellers list? or did I perhaps look like someone who would enjoy it? What would that person look like?

Anyway, rant over. We shall see!
