This reminds me that it is again Monday (the weeks these days contain no filling) and a wet Monday it is again to boot. My theory about either having good weather in May or in August continues to hold and a good early summer is paid for by a bucketing in these dog days, which are not of course dog days at all, for 'dog' for some reason implies heat.
The French refer to a heat wave as a 'canicule' the root being derived from the Latin canis - a dog - and so our word 'canine.' Where 'canister' comes from I do not know - but perhaps canisters were first introduced to contain dogs - you never know - at least without looking it up.

But anyway Monday seems to have become the day of the French conversation class when we gather in the Bear Hotel and converse with a charming lady called Carinne who has lived here for twenty years and whom you would never think of as French until she begins to speak. She is also rather elegant but it emerged in the conversation last week that she hated shopping. 'Yet you are always very chic,' I said. 'Ah' she said, 'My secret is the charity shop,' and indeed that is a wonderful secret to have. I have a brand new blazer from Harrods, with lovely brass buttons that came from a charity shop.

So to remind me of what August should look like and also of my French case here is the sign from the back road into the Mill. Whether such signs ever deterred anyone is a moot point. The message is the same as 'Trespassers W' (which, said Piglet, was short for Trespassers Will which was in turn short for Trespassers William - the name, said Piglet, of his uncle who had two names in case he lost one.) Happy Days!

I hope that Resident Owl is in Recovery and sleeping the sleep of the just after her domestic exertions at the weekend. A good day to her and to everyone (especially the pidgies who seem to be fated and that at a rate of knots). Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Morning Fennie and everyone,

Thank you kindly Fennie for posting for the larks.

Wonderful day at the beach yesterday with the family granddaughters were happy building sandcastles with their buckets and spades. The sun shone a little but the wind was quite cold but all helped by putting up the canvas wind breaker to shield us. We saw two seals too bobbing about on the water. Just before we left to go back home the girls had ice cream cornets and we had a hot Latte from the beach cafe. Son cooked us all dinner in the evening and the wine flowed.
However, I had an awful night, sinuses shut down which affected my breathing so only got five hours sleep, feeling a very very tired lark this morning.

Family are leaving later this morning and will be returning back home to Surrey. I will collect Patch today from Elaine let's hope he has been behaving himself.Very Happy

Lovely gentle sun this morning, clear blue sky and not a cloud in sight.

Enjoy your French lessons later Fennie, my French is very rusty I'm afraid mind you I feel rusty this morning too at the moment.Very Happy

Love charity shops have bought several pieces of clothing in the past from there have two good jackets with a designer label on them still look like new.

Have a good day everyone .

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Morning Camilla. Sounds like you had a wonderful time all together and a very well brought up son if he cooked you all dinner.

As to the sinuses - that must be awful for you. I am wondering whether old fashioned smelling salts would help? My old great aunt used to swear by them and and inhalation of just a whiff would clear anything. Just a thought. Very Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar Oh! to look chic from the charity shop, sadly most people send clothes they have grown out of to the charity shop the sizes are normally way too small. Rolling Eyes
OK I know there's an answer to that. Very Happy
Glad you've had a nice time with the family Camilla.

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Son cooked dinner which was kind of him Fennie but he put far too many cooked onions in the gravy with red wine too! I felt the worse for wear because of itVery Happy must stay clear of the old onions I love them but they always upset my tummy.

My Great Grandmother Edith used to use smelling salts little black bottle and if you took one whiff it would knock you out almost I know this because I took one whiff when I was 10 years of age just to see what they smelt like .Very Happy
