Cowart's Common Room
Magnificent Adventure

I was having my morning coffee and idly leafing through the pages of the Spectator where Peter Oborne was referring to 'the magnificent adventure that is life.' What a splendid phrase! Admittedly he was writing about the Hindu Kush where he has been playing cricket in a world sans internet or social media and therefore able to get on with the 'magnificent adventure' undisturbed. But the phrase put me in mind of my own little magnificent adventure of last evening which as a result of one of those unlikely concatenation of circumstances brought me to a Breton dancing class very like the one in the photo. Now normally this would not be my chosen way of spending a Friday evening. Indeed I would normally run a mile. But I have to say that it turned out quite wonderfully and I think the 4 entry fee bought a great deal more than 4 of happiness even to someone like me who has two left feet and two left hands as well - the Bretons choosing to dance with their hands at least as much of their feet in a manner reminiscent of trying to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time.

So there we were - all ages from 16 to very well past 60 - with live music from pipes, violins and accordions, shuffling energetically in circles and linking our fingers. They worked us hard, too with only a quarter hour break for a cup of tea. I think everyone was in a muck sweat by the end, which is why, I suppose, most dancers are lithe and willowy. Whatever, it had me thinking that it was at least as much a part of life's magnificent adventure as the Hindu Kush.

And we shall be doing it ourselves come 10th July when we have our Fez Nos - Breton for - what? - Fun Night maybe, when we shall have pancakes and cider and some of their accordions and instructors. Ours will cost 15 - well we have to raise money somehow and there will be crepes and cider. It would be wonderful to welcome some of you if you feel like coming down (only a short flight, FN, and we'd pick you up at the airport). You never know this might catch on.Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fennie's Avatar No, it's not my photo. This is culled from the internet. But the class last night looked very much like this. Now that your old car has passed its test you could hop in and drive over! We'd put you up. Very HappyVery Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar Perhaps I should start dance classes in the gymnasium... do we have a gymnasium?
We don't seem to have a sports club and I haven't seen anyone running around in their aertex blouse and knickers for a while. Blink

We could have world dancing classes and learn different styles from all over the place. Very Happy
