Cowart's Common Room

This morning, when I looked out of my bedroom window, I saw a hen pheasant. I was surprised to see small birds nearby, but realised that they were her chicks! I counted 9, but later, G counted 12. I saw them several times, but I have not been able to get a picture. If I succeed, I will post it here.
A hen pheasant usually lays about 12 eggs, but it is unusual to hatch all of them. It will be miraculous if she raises them all. Cats are probably the greatest danger. It is very exciting for us!

Lampworkbeader's Avatar Good luck with them. A herring gull caught most of the chicks in my sister's garden.

Fennie's Avatar Well she's got the right weather for raising chicks! Can't be much fun in pouring rain and high wind. Would it be worth putting birdseed out for them?

Blackbird's Avatar What a busy mother she must be! I wonder how long they stay with her?

Faith's Avatar A picture would be lovely Withy - do try to get one. As Fennie suggests maybe you should try putting out some grain - pheasants like peanuts too. And a big dish of water.

Withy Brook's Avatar The hen, with the cock, fed here before breeding. I put food on a tray on the ground. I might put some in the part of the garden where she is. She has access to water. There is a (rapidly reducing!) pond, much used by all birds.

Fairy Nuff's Avatar How exciting it will be to watch them grow.

Withy Brook's Avatar No sign of them today so far. There was quite a serious shower in the early morning, so that will refresh everything for them.
