Cowart's Common Room
Busy Day

Uploaded Image
It is half past four and it has been a busy day, although I confess I have just spent the last hour and a half in the garden studying 'An Ideal Husband' - the play we are performing for our Summer Garden Show. Later I shall walk down to the river. It's the same river as I show here in this photograph - the river Thaw which name, like Avon, may derive from the ancient Neolithic language. You find the name in Devon - Taw and in West Wales, Tawe and here, Thaw. Anyway this is what the river looks like in its quiet, Ashdown Forest, rambling way. It even has a Pooh Sticks bridge too, on which I taught Lea, our Estonian Workawayer, that noble game. She won I think, or maybe the river won. In winter we watch as the waters come higher and higher and now in summer they fall lower and lower. In the autumn, when the rains come the river will be full of sea trout, though they are not easy to catch and I haven't a fishing rod anyway. The river flows straight into the sea so if we spoke French it would be a fleuve rather than a rivière which is a river than flows into another river. Some people think 'Ideal Husband' is a serious drama, but it's really a farce. We shall camp it up for all its worth.

Fairy Nuff's Avatar What a lovely spot Fennie, I do like a game of Pooh sticks, we used to play it on the way home from school as the route home followed the burn all the way from the school and we had to cross it to get home, without a bridge!Very Happy

Withy Brook's Avatar It looks as though it should be a good trout stream. I would love to be there, casting a fly, hopefully catching a trout and cooking it over a camp fire as the sun goes down!

Fennie's Avatar Yes there ought to be trout, Withy, but I fear there aren't - a combination of pollution from farms and sewage works and poaching. Or maybe I don't know the water too well. If you bring your fishing rod, though, I could take you to a stocked lake not far away.

Camilla's Avatar What a really lovely spot Fennie, so tranquil. There is something really calming about a little river or stream.

Best of luck with the play Fennie, An Ideal Husband was staged by amateur dramatics a while back at the theatre in Sheringham in Norfolk. A friend of mine had a part in it, not sure what part he had, sadly I could not go for the opening night.

Blackbird's Avatar What a pretty sight but it would be better with fish. Maybe, just maybe, they will do a long term clean-up plan and they will return. That has happened in the NW but also in Seattle proper- creeks that had been piped underground have been daylighted, re-habitated and the fish have returned. It's pretty wonderful but it takes a lot of work and constant vigilance.
