Cowart's Common Room
Short Conundrum

At Wimbledon this year all the men's shorts were long - as they were maybe 60 years ago. The transition from short to long has happened quite rapidly. Everyone seems to conform. Why? We don't have a fashion 'leader' in tennis whom everyone follows. So how does it happen? Why don't some men wear short shorts and others long shorts? Very Happy

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I tried to explain this to you yesterday. It has nothing to do with the players themselves and all to do with the sponsors who get designers to set the trends. They all will design similar outfits because the sports industry is cautious - especially the men.

Re:
Camilla's Avatar Yes, as Rosie has said all to do with sponsers who set the trends.

Roger Federer was told by officials to stop wearing his trainers with bright orange trim, I wonder if that was a bad omen, he lost the tennis early in the game as we know, probably not though, he was winning the matches until he had to change trainers.Very Happy

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Rosie, you may well be correct (as you so often are) but in a world in which designers and manufacturers struggle to be different, to offer consumers the maximum choice and where you can find umpteen different styles of T shirt, it seems counterintuitive that manufacturers should choose - 'take them or go naked' - only one style of shorts. Besides the players are rich enough to design their own shorts and have them made up by fashion's best seamstresses. They could order any length they wanted. No, I can't held feeling that everyone is following a 'fashion' and my question is about who is setting this fashion when there isn't an obvious 'fashion leader' - a Diana, Princess of Wales, of men's tennis - for instance. Trousers (Fred Perry) became shorts and shorts became shorter (in all sports) to allow greater freedom of movement. Running shorts are almost obscenely short. But now for rugby, football, tennis shorts have become long again. Why? I wouldn't want to wear baggy fabric around my knees. And you see the whole thing all over the world! If Nike thought they could sell more short shorts than long shorts I am sure they would do so and I am sure if you go into a shop you will be offered a range of styles. Why therefore does everyone choose the same one?

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar It is all down to Sponsorship and in the case of Wimbledon club rules as to what is appropriate to wear.

Re:

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar So? If they are all doing it will be down to the Sponsors and club etiquette and to be honest Fennie it is way too hot to care Laughing

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar So the long and the short of it is short shorts are no longer and longer shorts are shortly in.

Re:
KitKatCot's Avatar I think it's a general fashion thing. You don't see young men going round in 'short' shorts now, they're all at the knee or lower.

I saw one of the lady players wearing leggings under her tennis dress. What's that about if not reflecting the hideous current fashion. Don't get me wrong I have seen some very stylishly worn leggings, it's just most wearers look like they could do with losing about 3 stones in weight. I'm off now before I really get startedArrowArrowArrowArrow
