Cowart's Common Room
We're going on a mole hunt...

I am sitting here all peacefully, making a few tickets for the Bangers 'n' Mash supper at the Village Hall when suddenly 'BOOM!!' and I am sitting, quivering like a jelly with shock.

My husband is shooting moles. Needless to say the mole, (public enemy No 1) is sitting in safety well underground, waving two fingers at the man with the gun.

They don't get any wiser with age do they?

Re:
Exmoorjane's Avatar He SHOOTS moles????? That sounds like a deeply frustrating endeavour.......

Re:
Muddyboots's Avatar what do they do? well the soil from the mole hills gets into the silage & causes problems: ecoli in the cows, reduces silage quality.

Re:
Mootia's Avatar Never seen a mole, even after 33 years of living in the countryside! Your hubbie's antics reminded me of a sketch which Jasper Carrot did on the radio about trying to kill moles - had the whole family in stitches....

Re:
Mountainear's Avatar Thanks Muddy I didn't know that either - husband is going at it purely from the aesthetic point of view. Did gas pellets work for you? - our neighbouring farmer tried them on a huge infestation with little effect. All suggestions gratefully received - so far they've pushed out the moth balls, laid low while a shot gun discharged and kept out of range of the hunting dog. Traps - well they're in place but still waiting to be sprung.

Actually I think the problem may be the over active husband! Perhaps i should channel his activities - chopping firewood or digging come to mind.

Re:
Unpeuloufoque's Avatar We have moles and garden looks like somme after the battle..each night moles come up to play and two daft labradors try and dig them out...each morning I come out to find two filthy labaradors and grass a minefield of holes and mole hiills!!

Re:
Preseli Mags's Avatar You need my Mum's cat, not a shotgun or a Labrador. She - Calico - has perfected the art of mole catching.

She then leaves the corpses outside the door of the granny annexe - just prefect for grumpy husband to step on!

Re:
Camilla's Avatar I have heard that - make a hole through the turf in your garden and stick a firelighter down it, apparantly Moles dont like them. Wont do it though, I am the ever so put up with any Moles, daft that I am.

Re:
Suffolkmum's Avatar I put up with them too Camilla, I like them, got a few molehills at the moment, but admittedly I'm not a farmer and my lawn is rarely exactly pristine at the best of times!

Re:
Tattie Weasle's Avatar Serious infestation at the moment so have trapped several but prefer other methods such as peeing on the hills - this I'm told is very effective but has landed me in a lot of trouble at school...
