Cowart's Common Room
The New Zealand Falcon or Kārearea

I seem to have a bird theme going on - funny never really thought of myself as a twitcher, but I guess I am!

This is a photo I took about 6 years ago in Central Otago - not very good as only my small camera. I was just so excited to see a falcon in the wild. We don't get them in the north, their habitat has shrunk (sadly). They don't eat carrion but catch live prey sometimes larger than themselves, and other birds on the wing and are capable of speeds of over 100 kph. I will be keeping a look out for these when in Central this weekend, albeit it briefly. So majestic.

Blackbird's Avatar Amazing, CG and I'm glad I'm not a mouse. Good luck with your hunt for one this weekend but I'm not sure you could get a better photo.

Sumarell's Avatar Great photo. We do have loads of hawks here in Central Otago, but we watched a falcon very close to the house a few weeks back.

Cowgirl's Avatar Wow, S, that must have been amazing. It's always a challenge to figure out whether its a Hawk or a Falcon, in the split second I see them down there. We are having one night in Lawrence to check on things at the cottage then driving up to Arrowtown for another night so you never know our luck! The one in the pic was on top of the Nevis. (Duffers Saddle).

Cowgirl's Avatar Hi Salle, What a worthy cause. We just have the one type of falcon here - Falco novaeseelandiae, or NZ Falcon. It is very like a sparrowhawk. We do get Australasian Harrier or Swamp Harriers as well - they are much larger (almost twice the size).
