Cowart's Common Room
Ring of Bright Water

Off on a pilgimage this weekend to visit the mythical CamusfearnaSmile
Sadly the house is no longer there (it burned down at the end of the book as it were) but we've been commissioned to photograph the bay and the memorials along with some of the artifacts in the Gavin Maxwell Museum so a busmans holiday it is...oh no not another couple of nights on Eilean Ban *dramatically slaps back of hand on forehead*

Re:
Fennie's Avatar What a lot one learns from these postings. I never knew that. But where exactly is this? The only map they showed was based on Oban and showed half the Highlands.

Re:
Vic's Avatar I love that film but it makes me sad! We also had a cat called Midge once, he got run over and by coincidence that film was on the tv. Sad

Lovely scenery.

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar The real "Camusferna" is a place called Sandaig just to the south of Glenelg Fennie.
map here
It's location was kept pretty secret for many years for the sake of the locals untill the lure of the film had died down...helped of course by the fact there are several Sandaigs on the west coastVery Happy

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Thanks, FN, Now understand where it is. The house reminds me of a ruined one on Yell (Shetland), standing like that proud over a little bay. It seemed fierce and defiant despite having lost its roof and windows. I often think when I meet old houses of the people and the children especially that must have lived there and what their lives were like.Very Happy

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar I can't believe it - Ring of Bright Water! Yes, yes, our next book! Sooo sad, so lovely, so wonderful!
I lost the book on my honeymoon with G in Portugal. We had left the car to go to the beach with nothing of value on show. Would you believe it? They broke in and took several books, all in English, including Ring of Bright Water.
What a sad man he was. Tragic. But that does not diminish the beautiful book. Have sailed past but never visited. Can you still only get there by sea or a long yomp?

Re:
Cowgirl's Avatar What Faith said! Spooky! I was just looking through some online DVD's for sale and saw Ring of Bright Water. I haven't seen it or read the book but it struck something in my memory from a child - a film my Mum took me to see about otters which made me cry and was hugely sad for a long time (I think the main otter was killed by a human) - it was in black and white. It would have been in the very early 70's. I did think about buying ROB but the sadness of the reminder was too much and I didn't...
