HELP please re duck!

I have acquired a duck! or rather a drake - all details of how/why will be in my next blog, but at the moment I need info as to what to feed him on please - he's a mallard. This afternoon he had doves grain, a few peanuts and soaked wholemeal bread.

Please tell me what I ought to be feeding him, thanks.

Cowgirl's Avatar My Irish neighbour has loads of hens, ducks, guineas and peafowl (or peathings as I call them). I've often looked after them when she is away and they all get the same food - chook pellets and vege scraps, but ducks need plenty of water too, to drink and to swish their bills about in. They will seek out slugs, snails, worms and other tit bits to add to their diet. Photo please!!

CalicoKate's Avatar Oooh lucky you, love ducks. Mostly they will fend a lot for themselves,, grass, leaves, seeds, slugs, snails, worms. Ours got a hen grain, wheat/corn type thing, plus anything from the house, vegs, meat or fish bits, cake crumbs & bread.
Agree with Cowgirl he will need water to splash about in, but a large washing up bowl might do him.
What are you calling him? and yes a picture please!

Fennie's Avatar What ducks love more than anything is a warm mash made with barleymeal and warm water. Otherwise I agree with all the above. They are even more omnivorous than chickens. They will also eat small fish, swallowing them whole. In fact I can't really think of anything a duck wouldn't eat. They are friendly animals, like dogs, and wag their tails a lot when they are happy, which they usually are. They are attracted by clicking noises made with your tongue but will also respond to duck noises - not so much 'quwack-quwack', but rather 'ack - ack' made with the throat open. They are also social animals and do best in company. Good luck.

Arosebyanyothername's Avatar How did you acquire him? Won't he fly back home? His presence might disturb your dove community.
