Swallows in NZ

Interestingly they don't migrate, they are here all summer nesting and feeding their young, and present in winter too although much less active. They came to NZ from Australia in the 1920's when some must have been blown off course from their annual migration to Tasmania. The ones we have are Welcome Swallows - as in the drawing.Uploaded Image

Re:
CalicoKate's Avatar Are they called Welcome Swallows because they are, welcome that is, or are they called that for another reason? How interesting that they don't migrate.

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Yes how odd that they just stay.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Well, if I had been going to Tasmania and ended up in NZ, I wouldn't want to try going anywhere over the sea again. Clearly they bought their sat-navs from Del Boy.Very Happy

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar I guess if the climate suits summer and winter why bother to move.
Quite a few species here are either not migrating at all or are only going to the south coast and not bothering to head further south into Europe now.
