Cowart's Common Room
Pine Marten

Guess what I saw this morning running across our lawn . . . a Pine Marten . . . WOW . . . too quick for me to get any pictures this time.

We have a lot of rabbits around at the moment which I guess has attracted the PM . . . I just hope he leaves our Red Squirrels alone . . . although have done a bit of research they do not seem to form part of the Pine Marten's diet in Scotland as much as they do in Europe. Plus we have an absolute glut of field mice and voles etc.

This is a picture of a Pine Marten - but not one of mine.

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar We were lucky enough to be watching three Pine Marten kits playing at our friends house on sunday evening...he also has a healthy population of Red Squirrels.
The Squirrels are far to fast to be a primary meal, it would waste too much energy to catch one unless it was old or sick, they eat far more nuts and berries...especially fond of a Baxters Raspberry Jam sandwichVery Happy
I'm sure they wouldn't say no to a nice juicy leveret either!

Lovely to watch them though (unless you have chickens).

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar I am hoping they will stick to the Rabbits and Lixtroll found a leveret head the other day - very fresh . . . so looks like it/they are preying on the rabbits plus we have an endless supply of mice etc.

So should I put out brown bread sarnies with raspeberry jam on - I have heard they like raspberry jam - friend of ours used to smear a log with raspberry jam for his Pine Marten.

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar It's a good natural boost of pure energy (the Jam) peanut butter goes down well with some of them too, the Squirrels may eat that too.

Re:
Cowgirl's Avatar Must be of the ferret family? We don't get them here. We do get stoats and weasels and ferrets that have escaped their cages - DOC trap all with a vengeance due to the decimation of the bird population - ground nesting birds the worst effected I guess. (Kiwi) Cute fellow though - the one in WW's picture reminds me of a fruit bat!

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Does it need to go on bread, or can I just smear it on a log?

Westerwitch's Avatar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_pine_marten

A friend of mine once found an abandoned Pine Martin Kit - he left it where it was for 24 hours incase the Mum came back - which it didn't - he then took it home and his wife hand reared it - later they were able to slow release it . . .

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar They are part of the same family only PMs are about a foot tall and three feet long if you include the tail CG, beautiful but deadly creatures.
No need to put the jam or peanut butter on bread if you don't mind sticky bits in the gardenVery Happy

Re:
Salle de Bain's Avatar Just Wiki'd Pine Martens...fascinating...but watch your brake cables!

I saw my first mink the other day...which I think are related to PM's. It ran across a road in front of me...and it took me a while to work out what it was.
