Cowart's Common Room
Roaring Wood Burner

Yesterday I went to an interesting lunch and bridge party that would have done well as a Purple Coo 'do'.
It was held in a gingang (a round farm building where grain was ground) that has been beautifully converted and still has its huge and numerous wood beams. When we arrived it had just been noticed that the wood burner was roaring and the flu was beginning to glow. After a bit there was somewhat of an exodus outside in case the doors burst open or the flu came apart! Our hostess's PA was the only one to really keep her cool and rang 999. Meanwhile someone realised that the stove doors were not properly shut. Once the proper tool had been found and they were shut, the roaring stopped and the immediate danger was over. We all packed back in and sat at the bridge tables to eat our lunch. Just as we were tucking into a delicious cold tomato soup, guess what --- a whole lot of strapping, great big, real (not virtual) firemen arrived to entertain us as we ate!!! It beat any Purple Coo party!!!
By the time we had to concentrate on our bridge, they had cleared out the burner and assured themselves that there was no longer any danger of fire where the flue went up through the main house. The only down side was the fire engine, when turning managed to graze the car of one lady's husband, which was new and a 'treasure'. She wisely gave them the number to ring!

Camilla's Avatar A real Fireman Withy.! fire always worries me, since we had a fire a few years ago. The chap who installed our woodburner and put new flu in did not use the correct material to the covering of the flu, it caught light and had to call out fire brigade, scary.
