Re:
Inthemud's Avatar 2oz of sherbert pips and 2oz of Bon Bons

My grandad went to the Post office every week to collect his pension and he always came back with 4oz of sweets for me and my sister. However, after a while he got stuck with asking for same hard boiled glace fruits and we got bored, the dining room drawer filled up with these sweets and they got sticky and horrible, we tried to say please can we have another sort of sweet, he would remember one week and then back to the hard boiled fruits!

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Always chocolate raisins.

My Dad used to go and get the papers from the paper shop at the weekend and would bring me back an Aero - every Monday I had a migraine!!!!! Although not convinced it was anything to do with the chocolate - more the fact that I hated school and Monday was really stressful for me.

Re:
Faith's Avatar Poor you WW, it must be awful for people who hate school or get bullied.

I will have jelly babies - making sure I get plenty of green ones!

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar Ooo now I like jelly babies.

I worried so much at school - that I wouldn't be able to do the work, or do the homework . . . I hated sports . . . oddly though I wasn't bullied and it was the sporty ones that tended to bully - somehow I got away with it despite being different and never feeling I fitted in. Today I celebrate that difference Very Happy

Re:
Mountainear's Avatar Miss Charles, our teacher and the head teacher of our little primary school, rewarded her best pupils each week with a boiled sweet. (although at the back of my mind is a memory of cough sweets.)

A sherbet dab perhaps for me.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar Sherbert Lemons please miss. With perhaps the odd acid drop thrown in. To suck on the bus.

What was sherbert? And why did it fizz so? Was it icing sugar and baking powder with a touch of citric acid? Wonderful stuff - sticky as Araldite and sweet as sick.

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar Well, that's put everyone off sherbert, Fennie.

I still have an unopened packet of something that was popular in the '70s. I can't remember what it is called but it sort of exploded in your mouth.

Re:
Faith's Avatar Oh yes I love Jazzies too FN, and the white ones which might be called Snowies. When I was visiting the shop in the photo, I had a mix of jazzies, jelly babies and sugar almonds. I can't remember what jazzies used to be called either.

Camilla's Avatar Great pic Faith, reminds me of what my old sweet shop looked like years ago when I was a child in London. It was owned by Mr and Mrs Beasley. Mr Beasley always wore a dark black suit and his wife was scary,Smile I love the old fashioned big sweet jars they had on the shelves, I still have one like in your pic Faith first left third shelve down.

I love sherbert sweets, hundred and thousands, pear drops and sugar almonds, also any liquorice .

Re:
KitKatCot's Avatar What about those little square things with coconut inside? What were they called? Mr Hunter, who used to deliver our groceries when I was a child, always put a little paper bag of them in the delivery for me.

Re:
Blackbird's Avatar I'm with Kate for a bit of everything- except sour things- just sweet.

Withy, are your Humbugs the very minty hard candy? There is a store on the Oregon coast that makes them for Christmas- I've thought of mail ordering them when I'm not down there at that time. My daughter and I have thought of making them- I'll let you know how that goes, if ever.
