Cowart's Common Room
A Very Plausible Scam

A friend of mine has just been caught by a very plausible scam. She received an email from a mutual friend who's on holiday in Spain, saying she'd had her passport and credit cards stolen and needed help. My friend emailed her back to commiserate and was asked in a very chatty email to send 450 by Western Union. My rather naive friend did - of course it's a scam. When I checked my emails I'd had the same message - as did everyone on the woman is Spain's mailing list. I feel so angry. My friend is such a nice person and it never occurred to her to even suspect anything. All she wanted to do was help someone in distress.

Re:
Fennie's Avatar This is a scam that seems to be doing the rounds. It is plausible. I had one of these emails which purported to come from a University professor. But luckily I emailed him and he confirmed he was still in Cheltenham and nowhere near Spain.

Re:
CalicoKate's Avatar My aunt had one of these, or rather I was sent one 'from' her. Apart from the fact I knew she wasn;t in Spain, the thought of my very wealthy aunt asking her penurious niece for money simply wasn't likely! Laughing
So sad to read that your friend was caught out. Hope it can be resolved somehow.

Re:
Arosebyanyothername's Avatar I had one of these last year from the owner of an English run kennels near Toulouse. As I thought the kennel was run less than satisfactorily (there was no one there when we went to collect Rufus) and I hardly knew the woman I thought what a b****Y cheek and didn't send any money. I checked up on it later found it was a scam and emailed to tell her that her email list had been used this way. She never even thanked me.

Re:
Westerwitch's Avatar I had one of these from a guest who had stayed here through chat on FB - horrible thought that I was actually chatting with a criminal - it all ended very suddenly when I said - you know I have just been in touch with you and guess what you are not stranded in the UK you are actually in Australia . . .

The idiots then emailed my as well . . .

At first I was taken in - but the minute they asked for money I was suspicious.

Re:
Lampworkbeader's Avatar Good news. I told my friend to get on to Western Union straight away. She did and they've refunded the money.

Re:
Withy Brook's Avatar I had one from one of my brothers. Not only did I know that he was not in Spain, but also the wording was such that he could not possibly have written it. Although I was quick off the mark to ring him to warn him, someone else had got in before me!

Re:
Fairy Nuff's Avatar Since they seem to pick Spain as a default I suppose it was only a matter of time for them to find someone who actually was there on holiday.Rolling Eyes
